I just wondered if anybody's ridden a bike where the chain and sprockets have been swapped for a belt drive system? Apparently it's meant to have a more direct feel?

Also wondered if anybody out there's got a link to any manufacturers or distributors of the kits?

What's that supposed to mean though? It sounds like some marketing gimmicky speech. Belts won't need cleaning and lubing (may still need adjusment but not sure about that), but they'll need replacing all the same, and imo, look fugly. As for being more direct, it could just be their chain was too loose.

You mean to your backwheel?! Your best sticking with the chain, only thing belt drives are useful for is drive to tranny in bigger bikes

Tell that to the GPZ305.

Sorry, yeah, I was talking about the drive train to the rear wheel.

Meant to be quieter too. I wondered if there were any other pro's or con's to 'em.

Transmission noise is nothing compared to wind and exhaust noise. Again, marketing speech. Very Happy

Belt drive is fantastic, speaking as an EX GPZ305 owner, however I did have one snap on me. Also suffered front sprocket problems.

Sadly the kawasaki dropped the gpz, only the big bikes have them now.

My second 305, was my first bike I used for despatching, camchain didn't last long, soon after it was replaced the engine went. I think the bike only had 40000 on the clock, it died young. Before the camchain problem I found it to be a great bike to ride. Both of my 305's were bought new.

Also didn't the 305 unit implode with style if you neglected the oil changes too?

Hi

Belt drive is a nice idea, and can work well.

However there are problems. They are a lot more bulky than a chain for the same strength. They are endless so replacement means removing the swinging arm. They last no longer than chains but give no real warning of impending failure. The system Buell use seems to be very particular about adjustment, with the belts lasting a nominal length of time if adjustment is slightly wrong. Likely to also be damaged by contamination with oil.

They are slightly better for transmitting power, quieter and lower maintenance. Cannot see how they are more direct feeling,

At the end of the day their only real major advantage is the lower maintenance, but that can easily be bettered with far better life expectancy by fitting a Scott Oiler to a chain drive bike.

All the best

Keith
