Apart from a decent fit and protection, my criteria for the perfect lid go something like this: no vents; no internal sun visor thing; quiet as possible; quick release fastener; range of bright colours.

I don't want any faddish shit (also, I'm generally an easy fit - medium in most makes). Budget - between one and two hundred quid, ideally.

But finding that sort of helmet seems more difficult than it should be. Do any spring to mind? Recs please. Cheers.

Wife has SV version, I had one of these a few years ago. Not 'the' quietest, but not too bad.

Nice Lid!

I have an alternative, it's cheap and if the OP is near a branch of J and S you can try one on, it's a quick release.

hard one that Trev, you say apart from fit. That is the most important criteria to me. I want a helmet I dont even think about when I'm riding. Colour doesn't even figure, racing I had a carbon carlos fandago thingy that weighed nowt, on the road I have a Schuberth that is quiet but has a sun visor that I really like.
For me... Fit, protection, something you don,t even consider when riding, fit for the purpose you want.
Would never consider the Shuberth for racing, would never consider the Carlos for riding out with the mates to Whitby.

I meant fit goes without saying. It's always my primary consideration. But yeah - this is just for road. So conspicuous, bright colour(s) would be a possible advantage - though then again, plain white is fine too. I just don't want any shit I'm never going to use like internal dark visors, that add weight and crap that can go wrong.

I never use vents either - not even through the hot weather last year. I'd prefer the money to be spent on quality shell, inner linings and decent visor material. Bells and whistles can fuck off. I don't need 'em. Plus I have this pet theory that because I rate quietness pretty high (do a lot of motorway miles these days, unfortunately), the more vents there are, the less aerodynamic the shell is, therefore the more wind noise will inevitably be created.

But it's surprisingly hard to find a lid that's very basic but really well made. There's stuff like Davida's Koura, which is tempting - but a bit dear, and in any case, might not fit me.

You can pick up some cracking ( no pun intended ) on some of the big brand name stuff.

Regularly see Shoei / Arai for well under the £250 mark if you don't mind last years ranges / colours.

I've seen XR1100 / GtAir for £230 online and Arai Chase V similarly priced.

No vents etc sounds like the retro looking Bell helmets I see all the hipsters wearing around London. Google suggests Bell Bullitt.

One flaw, the OP wants quick release which Arai don't do, Shoei have released new lids with quick release but they are over £500.

That's a strange requirement. Nothing wrong with double D-ring.

Not a requirement just a preference.

Could you could fit your own quick release to it, if you take it off an old helmet and use Kevlar thread?

I agree with the vents thing. I close them all up as they just create noise over 40mph, and below that I can open the visor enough to get a cooling breeze on my face.

Exactly. They are shit and just compromise the shell and create whistling noises and other extraneous sounds. And do fuck all about cooling you down.

Why is it strange? I've been using quick release for decades, in my line of work it's practical.

I meant I didn't think it ought to be a deal breaker.

Ok - point taken. So recommend me a helmet with no vents, no visor, no flip front, no other extraneous features but w/ or w/out quick release. Preferably in a conspicuous colour that could also include plain white.

Lining looks great. Would prefer acu gold but not essential. Will have to try and suss out where nearest stockist is. There's an Infinity in York and J&S in Doncaster.

I have a Biltwell lid. (mine has permanently open vents that allow in WAY more air than any of my other 4 lids.)
The linings are okay but not as plush as some of my others, but suitable for the price point I'd say. They do a full range
of (non pinlock) visors too, in just about every colour you can get sunglasses in. You can buy a full range of spares
including new liners, and alternatively coloured hardware for not much dough. I bought some bronze visor pivot
hardware for mine ( basically a washer and a bolt ) a while back, tenner all in delivered from the US of A. I have plain,
yellow, silver mirrored and black visors for mine. All about £30 a pop. My lid, the "Lane Splitter" is pretty light weight too,
can't imagine the Gringo S or would be any different with regard to spares or build quality, I think the Biltwell lids are DOT/ECE
rated. Some people wear the plain Gringo which is sold visorless, Gringo S is the visored variant. double D
fastening on these BTW.

Heres mine.
