Hi all,

I own a Honda GC125. It's very very used and quite old. Before I stripped the bike down it was having lots of problems which couldn't be rectified but I won't go into much detail.

My question is what is should do with a stripped motorcycle, where I have separated all the parts (electronics, metals, plastics etc). Should I take it to a ATF to have it scrapped? But then can the scrap j stripped bike as I want to receive a certificate of destruction so what would I need to bring to them? If not, then should I sell it? I don't want ownership of the bike if I sell it so what constitutes a motorcycle which has been stripped and sold in parts (or all together)?

Thanks for any responses. My question is what I should do, the above wasn't more questions, however just points which I want to express to get the ball rolling.

Ah! What an interesting question! IF you've got the V5C:

1) You can take it to a proper scrap dealer (ATF) who will be pleased to take it and give you a certificate of destruction, but are most unlikely to give you any money.

2) You can sell it (at least the frame with associated VIN) to someone, and transfer ownership as normal.

3) You can cut up the frame into bits so that it can't be re-used and take it to your local recycling centre (or a scrap merchant), then fill up the relevant yellow part on the V5C saying you have broken it up yourself and send it to DVLA.

Is making a sock abusive, or spam, or something a moderator can fix?

Thanks for the reply. I'll look into selling the frame as the nearest ATF is 3hrs away :(

Why not just scrap it yourself? Hacksaw through the frame, cut the headstock off and ditch it, maybe crushing it flat in a vice first?

Wouldn’t that cover the ‘scrap it yourself’ aspect?

This would be ideal. I just never thought you could do it yourself with the DVLA on board. I just want to have the bike no in my ownership once I scrap it. So if I can scrap it myself then great, but does the DVLA actually accept personally scrapping a bike yourself?

Also how tf do you reply on here? Surely this quoting thing I'm doing is not right? Thanks for you reply.

CG 125 not gc
Where do you live, someone who lives not too far away from you may take it
off your hands if you have a kosher V5 or maybe just for spares if not

(All this assuming its not another tedious feckin wind up)

Check on the v5 before you start with the hacksaw but I’m pretty sure it says something about a box to tick - but only if you’ve scrapped the thing yourself. A glance at your v5 or the dvla www site would solve this. I’d look at mine but I’m not near them at present.

Bung it on ebay as a project for a 99p starting bid. Someone will come and pick it up and pay you for the privelage.

A quick google search and look at the dvla website seems to indicate you have to take it to a official breaker. Either that or you sell the bike and officially transfer it to the buyer.
Step forward Paddy!

I’m rather out of date it seems - but I will check on my v5 when I remember!

Look. If you're close enough and it's cheap enough I'd buy it. I just don't understand why you'd scrap and not sell?

Because it’s a rotten old frame from a common that’s pretty much useless to most?

sell it

I bought a CG125, took it apart, failed to put it back together and sold it for what I paid for it, which was peanuts

What's strange is that you don't get why it's not strange at all.
