Tried (!) fitting my new JT X1R 520 chain to my bike yesterday (along with new sprockets), all went OK until I tried to "mushroom" the master rivet. There weren't any instructions with the chain so I didn't know how far to go (never riveted a chain before), did Googling to no avail, so decided to aim for 0.4mm of total spread. Started turning, last measurement was 0.15mm, then went at it again and heard a crack . . . sure enough, the rivet has split. Doh. New master link time.

Anyway, does anyone know what the "spread" should be on these chains? I don't want to keep on wrecking master links and faffing around grinding them off again!

Cheers

The spread of the link is only supposed to stop it coming off. It doesn't add really to the structural strength so you only need to ensure its actually spread. I think i settled on about 0.1 mm last time and that was on my litre triumph.

Ive never lost a chain btw.

Spoke to JT directly (which was actually easier than I expected); it's 0.4mm spread. There was a "knowing" sound at the other end of the 'phone when I mentioned about it cracking. Laughing

Ordered two more, working on the reverse psychology that having a spare will make it less likely for me to mess up on the second attempt
