Hi, my bike is approaching 3 years old - mid Sept. If I get a mot next week would it be a 13 month one eg from month 35 to 48 or 12 - to month 47? I know if you present a vehicle in the last month of its previous mot it preserves the anniversary but does this count for the first? Can DVLA computers figure this out?
It’s not a huge snag if not, I’ll hang on for another three or four weeks but I’ve got next week off so it’d be convenient.

Thanks!

Not anymore with the 13 month MOT's. Thanks are due to the digital age and the online MOT's. Even how long the MOT takes is monitored now.

I've just done my car with 30 days left, but still ended up with 12 months. Just wish they would do the same for vehicle tax, do the start date from a specific day of tax and not from the start of the month and lose the end of the month if buying, selling at any day other than the first or last day of the month.

.gov.uk says you can.

Earliest date you can get an MOT
An MOT lasts for a year. The date it runs out is printed on your current MOT pass certificate.

You can get an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out and keep the same renewal date.

Example
If your MOT runs out on 15 May, the earliest you can get an MOT to keep the same renewal date for next year is 16 April.

You can get an MOT earlier, but the renewal date for the following year will change to one year (minus a day) from the date the vehicle last passed its MOT.

Example
Your MOT is due to run out on 15 May, so the earliest you can get it done is 16 April. However, you take your vehicle for its MOT on 14 April and it passes. This means that the MOT expiry date changes to 13 April the following year.

I thought that 13 months ones were still around but they have had a shake up of mot’s of late so I’m not sure.
The quote posted by Ste doesn’t mention the first mot though - only the expiry date of the previous one. I’ve not yet got one - obviously - and am wondering what to do?

I’ve read the gov mot section thoroughly and other than telling me that I need a certificate after three years - which I knew - it doesn’t mention it. I’ve just looked on the mot check part of the site and it clearly says I need a mot test soon even telling me the date I need it doing by. As the system obviously knows this I wonder if it’s linked to the database the mot tester will use and so give me a 13 month certificate- or if that’s too much like joined up thinking!
Mheh. I’ll find out next week!
I am assuming that the bike passes of course!

I will, yup. If not, so be it, not a major issue. I’m curious more than anything. It’ll only be about three weeks extra so not really worth reorganising my life to fit in!

It's really not that difficult, but sounds complicate written down.
It needs an MOT three years after first being registered.
You won't be able to tax it without MOT if that period has expired.

If your tax renewal doesn't coincide with MOT for some reason you might still risk riding it but insurance won't be valid and there's a chance ANPR or something will pick you out.
If you have a crash bad things will happen. Tut Tut

You can arrange the MOT during the month before it is due and the renewal date stays the same.
You can do it before that (e.g. to sell with long MOT?) but the renew date will be changed to match the date you did it +12 months.

If you overlook it you can still do it later without any penalties, I would expect the renewal date would stay as it was originally i.e. you might effectively pay for an 11 month MOT.

Hi, short answer is yes - I've just done this with my car - 1st ever MOT not due until 30th August, but sent in for it's first one at the beginning of August and next MOT now not due until 29th August 2020...

Book it in.... Very Happy

Yes it can be done, took my bike for it first M.O.T, registered on the 29/6/16, took it for M.O.T in early June, the M.O.T now expires 28/6/20, as has been said there must be less than 30 days remaining for the new M.O.T to be added.

Your garage screwed up somehow. It's even easier to get a 13 month MOT in the digital age, as previously you needed to present your old MOT certificate. These days the expiry date is on the system.

Garaged, scheduled services maintained, average UK mileages, parked up for the worst of the winter , should be no problem whatsoever
Year round use by Evil Knivel and chucked in the hedge every night, it might need some work.

2016 Panigale, 9600 miles, looks pretty much as new, well maintained, parked up for the worst of the winter but used on the cold dry days year round. I’d hope it’s a formality but there’s always the nagging doubt!

13 month things is now automagic (due to being electronically charged). Proved, again very recently.

NOT for the first MOT (nothing to charge up). True when one of mine needed a first MOT (I tried quite hard to achieve this magic).

In fact it is impossible not to retain the expiration date if it's presented within the one calender month because there is no way for the MOT tester to change it, If it lost a month it would have been presented too soon. And yes it will do it for the first MOT date as well, if it's due on the first of jan , test it on the 2nd of dec it'll run out first of jan.
