What bike ????

Hi All,

I have just passed module 1 and have module 2 in a couple of days .
I am 6’ and 14 stone ... age - 52- I had my heart set on the Honda rebel 500 , as I like the look and the fact you can customise it, but concerned it will be too low and maybe not so gutsy after a year of riding ? I also like the Honda cbr650r and its 500 cousin .. ( I have been training on Kawasaki 650, which also is a nice bike ?)
I am favouring Honda as I can get a deal through my place of work .. the rebel is less scary atm , ( don’t take the p***) but will the 650 be too much at the moment ? Both bikes seem to get decent reviews .. your thoughts are welcome on both bikes pros and cons and any others that I should look over

At 52 years old you should have the self-restraint and confidence to ride any size bike - they all have throttles. As a novice rider you'll find the self-learning progress much easier on a bike with a more relaxed seating position than a true sportsbike but different people have different motivations. All styles have their merits. Anything 600cc+ is going to haul you about the place no problem (maybe not Enfields) so look about the dealers, sit on a few, see what the seating position feels like.
Sounds like you're a bit lanky so you're probably right about the Rebel's seat, plus it's a bit underwhelming in performance and doesn't even have a great tank range.

Hmm, I don't think the Rebel will be for you but by all means book a test ride. If you like cruisers you might want to consider the Kawasaki Vulcan instead.

A kawasaki Vulcan for a 6' rider? Are you sure that's a good idea or bit of advice? What budget is OP working to and is there any big dislikes or brands they don't feel love for?

Reason I ask is assuming they are looking for a nice planned long term bike, then someone of that age and experience is likely to buy what they like the look of best. It won't be able the last penny or about objective performance etc.

The throttle works both ways, it’s not an on/off switch but proportional. At your (our!) age we SHOULD have enough self control to not just pin the throttle and pray!
I wouldn’t recommend anything too extreme though, I’d say any reasonable normal bike should be fine!

Or just buy what you want. You’ll learn to ride on anything, no matter how fast, because the fear will keep you alive. Modern abs and traction control is epic and saved my ass a few times as I had an mt09 tracer for my first bike. Now have a gen 1 fazer thou, it’s unforgiving compared to the tracer, but I’ve learnt the important stuff on the tracer
