Just buy a 20 quid facet copy and replace it.

I'd be surprised if the pump is in the tank so spraying it with water wouldn't really achieve a lot.

Apparently it's a PITA to fit, so I find myself just covering the tank when the bikes parked up for prolonged periods

Sounds like the tank pressurises, and the pump cannot kick in due to the pressure.
It shouldn’t happen, as I suggest the tank breather (possibly in the cap,) is the culprit, find it and clean it.

If it was a pressure issue then taking the fuel cap off would allow the bike to start?
