It's been sometime since I purchased any accessory for the bike but I'm looking to replace the monstrously loud blue flame cans on my TRX850, for something hideously loud but with removable DB killer.
What criteria do I need to keep in mind to match something up, is it just the tube diameter? Not many options pop up on eBay for the TRX so I was wondering how I could just match one to the bike with figures.

Also, is it still the case of you get what you pay for?
The Chinese have produced this set which fit apparently...
Carbon cans

That's basically straight through but with padded holes at the side. Your neighbours will love you!

I'd have thought your first line of thinking should be what do you need? Whole exhaust or is what's on in fair condition? If you're keeping the downpipes and the rest till the actual end cans then how will they fix on?
How do the current ones fix to the bike? Bolts? A pipe clip? Springs?

If you can suss the attachments, the diameters/lengths etc then you're left with how well it should breathe and deaden the sound.
Sometimes those decibel killers are available but often they either don't work or will restrict gas flow massively.
As a side note the MOT tester yesterday thought my end can wasn't too bad (Scorpion) but 'some of those Harleys' he said grimacing!

Mine is currently very loud at present, I was hoping to buy a set with the option of “please pass my bike through MOT”

Downpipes all good thankfully, they are attached with clips that can be adjusted with a socket. They attach in the common method onto the bracket for the pillion pegs.
I’ve attached a photo that shows this setup. Thumbs Up

Am I right in saying whatever came on the bike from factory was the perfect flow? Or having a straight through is better all round?
It appears impossible to know how an exhaust will perform in terms of sound and performance until it’s fitted right?

Different exhausts will optimize for different revs. More back-pressure gives better low-down torque, more free flow means less resistance to higher revs (ICEs are basically pumps). Look at the actuated flaps etc. that are put onto various bikes to try and compensate each way.

So I don't think there's a perfectly tuned exhaust. And then there's emissions, as regulations have gotten tighter exhausts will probably have been adjusted more to tune for that than for torque or peak power.

My Remus is like that and it's not too loud.
(What do you mean, "Why am I shouting?" ? Laughing )
Seriously, it is rorty but acceptable, only occasionally gets an advisory, "Louder than stock" from an MOT tester, and the neighbours don't complain.

Just a thought: The cans that are on now - did they come with the bike? Did you get them new and put them on? Were they always loud?
Mine is similar in that the ends of the can are held on using pop rivets and can be drilled out easily.
Inside the can is usually a flame-proof wadding wrapped around certain parts. It slowly degrades and vanishes. If any wadding has vanished from your current cans then they'll be loud.
Might be worth checking?

eBay is chocka full of wadding packs if you need some.

Good point, well made. Be a shame to have to start pulling them apart but I take your point. The wadding would improve the deep rumble to.

How many end cans come with 'not approved for road use' now? I would suspect most as I doubt any manufacturers can justify the costs of having them approved.

The last ones I bought that had all the correct stickers and stamps were LeoVince ones for my stripple and they were almost the same price as OEMs.

Those removable dB killers aren't that effective on straight-throughs. They do muffle the sound a little, but if the bike's really loud that's how it will stay. From my experiences with carb'd bikes with open end-cans, the dB killer will tame it slightly around town and give you less of a headache if you have to take a long journey somewhere. I'm a fan of loud pipes. However, if you really want to quieten things down you won't have much joy with an open can with removable baffle. The stock exhaust if you still have it will probably be the quietest if rather humdrum option, else a complete aftermarket systen or a road-legal end-can, neither of which will be cheap.

Bought a can for the rat as OEM exhaust is a fucking Unicorn. dB killer was useless, it was effectively straight through with little sound absorbtion. Had to drill the rivets open and repack it with ceramic, *after* re-jigging/welding the internals so it wasn't straight through any more. It's still loud if you open her up, but it's far less offensive than an open piped 125 is.

If you can do basic DIY and your existing can is riveted, then I'd suggest that route if it's not battered. Ceramic matting/blanket lasts longer then fibreglass and isn't expensive - yell if you get stuck. I'll probably take this route when the Delkevic on the Viffer shits it's contents out the back, especially as it has a nice, clear, obvious BS stamp that stops Mr Police Officer being a dick about things.
