Hi all. New to all things motorcycle related. I'm purchasing a twist and go Vespa 125 over the weekend and am taking my CBT tomorrow. Whilst I have access to an open face helmet to tide me over in the meantime I'm looking to purchase a retro full face helmet (I'd quite like to increase the chances of keeping my chin if I come off) but am looking for advice on the best way of purchasing.
I hear that helmet size can vary by manufacturer so I'm guessing that going to shop to get fitted/measured would be the best way forward rather than just buying online? Has anyone successfully purchased a helmet online and not had to return the item?
Can any of you provide some suggestions of a full face retro looking helmet which has a good safety rating? I quite like the look of the Bell Bullit series but have read that the chin safety is not the highest.

The one with the best safety rating is the one which fits you the best.

That means you need to try on as many different helmets as possible rather than buying online based on your head measurement.

A good start is to think of your budget and look at https://sharp.dft.gov.uk/helmets/?manufacturer=All&type=1&min-rating=5 for ideas. It'll be better to try one on if you can before purchase. That said, I bought a cheap 5* one on head measurement and it was a good fit.

None that I wore for more than a minutes or two. ~Half a dozen. I've had helmets before. It was a lucky buy and fitted well, so I didn't have to return it.

Then again I haven't got a funny-shaped head.

You might want to at least get down to a shop and try a few on. If you're lucky you might find everything in medium fits fine. Or you might be unlucky, like me, and find almost everything in medium is too tight and everything in large is too big... I tried on over a dozen helmets in J&S a while back till I found something comfortable.

So I completed the CBT today (on a 50cc, restricted to 30mph!) and picked up the Vespa GTS125 to ride it home this evening. What a difference; Weight, quality, responsiveness, speed. I think I'm going to enjoy this Smile

Thanks! Would you believe a lifesaver stopped me knocking off a cyclist today who overtook me whilst I was just about to pull away after giving way to oncoming traffic.

^^^ Been cycling for decades, thousands of miles done and only since riding a motorcycle have I started doing lifesavers on the pedal bike.

I also keep checking my non-existent mirrors.

Well I think I'm really beginning to love this scooter malarkey. I rode the 20 odd miles over to the motorcycle store to pick up some bull-it jeans and a protective bomber jacket on Sunday. At one point the vespa showed 70mph on the clock which I was surprised at, but moreso I found pootling around the towns in a 30 really quite enjoyable.
Next weekend I'm off to a different store to try on some helmets as they have a sale on and stock the one I'm interested in.

Oh - and I've already had my first car pull out in front of me. Thankfully I had anticipated it and had slowed down. Shocked

I always did lifesavers on my pedal bike in the absence of mirrors, I transferred that "habit" when I was learning to ride a motorbike but actually had to trim it back a bit as if anything I was doing too many. I do check non-existent mirrors on my push bike a lot . . . it always disappoints me when they're not there.
