Road rage story from yesterday

So we were both riding just on our way back from my car theory test (passed btw), we were stopped at the lights in front of the queue and I heard a scooter revving just behind me on my right hand side.

Gear-wise the guy had only a helmet on, with shorts and a hoodie, so I thought "Here we go he's gonna want to go first now" already revving like mad.

Lights changed and obviously the scooter went for it, overtook me (while I was still probably finding my biting point so no rush ) and then overtook J very close and very idiot-on-a-scooter-style.
As expected J wouldn't have it, a squid on a scooter overtaking a big bad biker on a big bad cruiser, so he matched the speed of the scooter and told him that it's dangerous what he's doing, so I was told. The guy apparently said then "I've done nothing wrong" but somehow this quickly escalated to both of them riding really close, shouting at each other and the scooter guy tried to kick J off his bike and punch him. Then he sped up, did a wheelie on the road, just at the light controlled entrance to a roundabout and went through a red light in the process.

This was all in front of me as I kept well back, knowing that scooter is gonna cause trouble and J will be trying to 'educate' by shouting at him.

I just wanted to share, there is no point to that story, maybe except the fact that I've done absolutely nothing and kept out of it, which knowing me is a fantastic progress. Don't get angry, let them idiots go, keep on riding.

B - Don't approach scooter hard boys even on 'a big bad (read gay) cruiser. The amount of stabbings and bike jackings is going up and you open yourself to some abuse.

Brush off idiots and carry on. If I had a moan at everyone on my commute who acted like a turd, I'd never get to work.

I wouldn't have bothered trying to educate anyone tbh. I'd have thought "Bye mate, nice hairdryer " or something
similar and maybe fate would produce a nice bit of dual carriageway a bit further down the road where I can literally blast
past at a jogging pace while they are flat out. If not meh, who cares. Just another nobjockey, another will be along pretty soon...

It happens and lots. A recent one for me was in a line of traffic and I could hear a 2 smoke bike revving hard and getting closer up the line of vehicles. They joined me in my gap in the line of cars. It was a lad aged about 14 on a scrapper of a 'road legal' motorcrosser - a 250 KTM. If it helps he was wearing a lid, a white t-shirt, football shorts, no socks and pointy black dress shoes.
He kept revving stupidly beside me and then began overtaking. He almost came off several times and finally vanished by heading across a stubble field.

Anger, red mist is everywhere. I've been called a w*nk*r many times when slowly filtering past cars stuck at traffic lights. I can hear frustrated drivers screaming it. Should get a bike..

It's people like that who give bikers a bad name.

BTW, how do you rev a scooter at standstill when they're not manual gearboxes?

I used to out for a pint with someone who loved pushing buttons until he found the right one.

Couldn't just keep it zipped. He got punched quite a few times and unfortunately wasn't good at defending himself.

Whoever this J is, he shouldn't have got into a slanging match with another road user. The fact it got physical coyld, potentially, result in all sorts of complications. But then, you knew that already. You didn't get into any silly entanglements. You didn't risk anything by doing something stupid. No, clever you. You got your tuition or test tips and a cool story to share. Tell you what, though. If J wants to risk assault charges, being stabbed, etc. for the privilege of being the help, that's on him. I wouldn't.

And I've told him off for all that. We don't need the trouble or the hassle dealing with the consequences. Riding should be enjoyable.

But thanks for your comments, just wanted to share this story cause I don't have much experience on the road and its all new to me, I know people probably see similar things on a daily basis but that was a first one for me.

Why get involved in trying to chase other road users down? It's pointless, puts more people (including members of the public not involved) at risk due to potentially driving dangerously, and puts J at risk of getting stabbed, jacked, pushed off his bike or whatever. A big bad (gay) cruiser likely weighs as much as a horse and that's a decent knee/ankle injury if not a broken bone waiting to happen.

Secondly, it becomes a physical altercation, potentially with a minor. Regardless of the scourge these ped boi's may be causing, a decent prosecution will talk the jury into believing that a middle aged responsible man knows better than to get involved and give the kid a good hiding.

My course of action? Shake head, move on.

one thing I never (or try never to do) is get road rage on the bike, it's never going to end well, especially not in London where anything goes, even in the car I don't bother anymore (which can be difficult!), just need to accept that everyone else drives and rides like an idot except you

There are loads of young morons riding scooters where I live, I think it quite funny watching their antics. They can be a pain in the arse sometimes but it is never worth getting into an argument with them. I just get out of their way and trust to natural selection to take care of the truly idiotic and dangerous ones.

Seems like J didnt like getting smoked by a ped in front of you. Serious man points were lost and he had to get them back by speeding up and waving his finger at said ped, ped pulls a wheelie and totally destroys J yet again, J should be hiding in closet for a long time
