That's a serious criminal offence under the firearms act. Only a registered gunsmith is allowed to do that.

You CAN go to jail for it.

Actually it isn't as long as you hold a current FAC and apply to have the weapon added to the FAC before you convert it. IIRC once it's been converted to FAC (over 12 ft lbs) it can't be converted back and remains a section 1 weapon until it's decommissioned.

It's lucky that he wasn't the one doing the conversion then. Wink

Pretty sure you need to be a gunsmith to upgrade a "not specially dangerous" air weapon to FAC level. Maybe not. Maybe they changed that?

As you say, once done, it cannot legally be undone. It has to either remain an FAC weapon or be deactivated or destroyed.

It actually isn't a bigger deal as people think. All you are doing is doubling it power, it's not lethal as it's not like a real gun like what Derek Bird used.

All guns are. it's just some use compressed air rather than explosive propellent.

People have been kiled by air guns. The law says over 12 pounds pressure makes it a firearm.

Saying 'it's just a pellet gun' is fucking pointless and stupid thing to say. What if you were to increase the pressure up to 100 pounds? At what point doies it become just as lethal as a exploive propellent firearm?

No. At the end of the day it's a section 1 firearm and possession of one without a firearms certificate is an indictable criminal offence contrary to section 1 of the Firearms act 1968.

You can be arrested for it without a warrant.

Summary sentence in magistrates court is 6 months and/or £400 fine.

If you're lucky enough to go to the crown court, up to 5 years and unlimited fine.

You don't need to know it was a section firearm. You just need to know you posses the item in question to be guilty of the offence. Knowingly possessing it would be an aggravation.

I appreciate all of your inputs, as always. The air rifle was sold. He modded it, someone commented they wanted to buy it, the deal was struck, he drove down from Liverpool and paid cash.

It had a cheap scope on it, it owed my mate £750 all in, with the mod the lad paid £1100. Neither myself or my mate have the gun anymore.

I would have thought a real gun would be more powerful, *just checked* it is, they are not even close. A 22 generates 130 ft lbs of energy at the muzzle whereas that of the air rifle is only about 26 ft lbs, even modded it's not even in the ball park.

You've most likely been had by the audiophiles (the worst of all the philes).

The "ball park" is 12ft/lb long. Anything larger than that is out of the ball park and a de-facto firearm. You really need to get that into your head. If you get caught in possession of a hopped up airgun, there is no room for leniency, it's a strict liability offence. You get caught, you get prosecuted, you get a criminal record for possession of a firearm. Doors close. You can't go to the USA for one thing.

Youtube did you a favour really. You could have landed up trying to argue the toss over an absolute offence with a judge.

And don't for one minute think the police don't watch youtube. Someone on this very forum had their doors kicked-in first thing in the morning and all their bike and computer equipment seized. That was all down to a video of them riding like a cock on the Cat and Fiddle road.

Doesn’t Matter. For obvious reasons the UK government takes a very dim view with firearms offenses. Air rifles of more than 12 ft lb IS EXPLICITLY defined as a firearm under UK law. It’s been that way since I was a small child. I have a leaflet somewhere called ‘air weapons and the law’ which was printed about 1991 which says that.

Get caught in the street with something classified as a firearm and it’s. 7 year MINIMUM a jail sentence (iirc).

Well, let's hope this (drug) dealer or (debt) collector from Liverpool doesn't actually harm anybody with it, as that can only make things worse for you if traced back, not only have you illegally modified a firearm, to make make it an illegal firearm, you have then gone on to supply an illegal firearm, top man !! Thumbs Up

Oh, and if the police choose to follow it up, your confession is right here on this forum. So, you've incriminated yourself once on youtube, and, then, just to be doubly sure, incriminated yourself on here !! Bonus !! If only all criminals were so accomodating

So much attention was drawn to the videos because the rider was getting free stuff from companies which would be featured in said videos. That is what caused it to all go wrong. Sad

If a buyer paid £1,100 for the air rifle then IMO they're not a typical scummy piece of shit.

Scummy pieces of shit get their air rifles by swapping them for a pit bike / PS4 / iphone / staff puppy / etc etc etc.

He drove from a place called Dovecot in Liverpool to Stafford and never quibbled about the price, just paid in a mixture of £50's and £20's, nice bloke, came, tried the air rifle in mates back garden and drove off once happy.

All this talk of foot/pounds I had to look up what energy a crossbow has...

80ft/lb apparently! And compound bow is about the same.

Are there similar laws for bows as guns?
