A guy in my office just got a new licence after old expired and now has entitlement 'A' on it (valid from 19/01/13 - an important date it seems)
Never been on a bike and never had 'A' on a previous licence.
Then the other guy in our office pipes up - yep I've got that too (also valid from 19/01/13).

is this common - what gives..?

Almost certainy it'll have a Code 79 - restricted to trikes.

That said, sure someone on here was gifted a Full A license when the DVLA fucked up.

Aye, but for every one that had it gifted, a few hundred probably lost theirs.

There are some proper horror stories... I have a habit of "losing" my license when something needs changing on it.

This has prompted me to update mine (first time since 1992 I think) to a photo one. The last time I moved (98) I tries to update teh address ans they sent it (pink/green paper one) back with my old address simply crossed out in pencil. This though was not recorded on their 'puter and so for the past 20 odd years they had the wrong address..

Keep hold of it. Tell them you need a replacement, cost you £20 or so. As said, they like to "lose" entitlements.

Yep, in 2013 when they shook up the licensing system/categories, trikes were moved into class 'A' so they gave everyone entitlement but with a restriction.

My own horror story is that they removed my car entitlement but somehow managed to retain my bus category, which you can't get without the car bit. Took about seven months to put right, and one of the people I spoke to basically admitted that to delete it could have only been human error/intervention.

I seem to recall that entitlement is now directly linked to bike licences, but those with (non-bike) licences from before 2013 were still entitled to ride them with their original licence under grandfather rights, hence the restricted entitlement appearing. If you find someone with a car only licence who passed their test after 2013 you'll probably find no entitlement against the A category.
