My Vara 125 died the compression on the front cylinder was 0.

So I grabbed a used engine of eBay for £200 he said it was running

I tested the compression at 80psi and 100psi looks bad but I thought if I can get some oil moving round maybe it will improve but it will not start!

I have checked the spark, looks good and got some new plugs
Removed the flywheel to confirm the woodruff key has not slipped
I have 2 lots of carbs in which I've cleaned both of them out a d tried
I've tried spraying some starter spray in the intake to help
Best I got out of it was a small judder when I dropped some oil in the plug holes to help seal the pistons

I can't get it to fire. Would you say 80psi on the rear cylinder is too low and the engine has had it?

Many thanks

As a general PSI figure they are low. I'm not sure what a Varadero should be but I would expect 100 psi to be the absolute minimum on a bike engine so to answer your question, yes, 80 psi is too low.

However I would expect some sort of combustion, especially with easy start.

edited to add - are you checking it with the throttle full open?

Did you go to the trouble of finding out why your first engine ended up with no compression on one cylinder or are you just hoping that throwing a piss poor amount of money at it might fix it?

I'd have wanted to know why I had no compression at all before
abandoning an engine too.
It may/might be fixable.

I got the bike as a stolen recovery, the compression has been slowly dropping on the front cylinder since I bought it, using oil and smoking.

I figured the cost of getting the engine stripped down and rebore would be much more than a used engine as doing that work is out of my skill.

Absolute compression figures are not all that relevant. An increase in compression when oil is added to the bore is a bad sign.

Total loss of copmpression on one cylinder especially without some sort of fairly spectacular "event" might just be a tight tappet.

Have you looked at the top-end of either engine? Checked the plugs?

My 350 bullet lost all compression while doing 60. A quick check of the plug revealed it had suffered a catastrophic engine failure because the end of the plug was missing. A look down the hole with a torch told me what sort of failure had occurred (snapped valve).

Yes the original engine I replaced the valve seals and checked the slides I think the top end was fine, just the rings must of warn out

To update the seller has agreed to give me another engine to try so hopefully can get running and not a loss.

The original engine will be getting an engineer to look at it at some point but I need to speak with him first and find out the costs.

Worn, not warn. You wouldn't end up with zero compression from worn rings.
