Hi new here, my dtr 125 would not start so first thing i did was check the spark plug, all seemed fine until I checked for a spark against frame and nothing.

Disconnected kill switch still nothing.
Checked cdi and stator and it’s getting power on a multimeter

So took it into garage, they told me that they got the bike started but there not sure how,

They messed around with some wires on the stand and looked at others around the bike,

The wirering isn’t great because the previous owner cut the side stand wires and left exposed, and it’s the same with indicator wires back and front

So I taped up many wires left exposed, re-connected the side stand wires and re-arranged the wiring with more space.

Bike was running fine with no problems for a few weeks,

Today on my way to work The bike would stop running every time I stopped at lights, so I would have to keep the Revs up in order for the engine to stay running, about 10 mins later it stopped running and would not start, took it home and it’s the same problem no spark.

sometimes I get a spark sometimes I don’t

Any ideas what this could be ? Thanks

I had this on my DTRE and traced it back to a dry joint on the stator plate itself. A quick solder job later and never had the problem again.

Get a manual and do the meter checks on the stator and coil.

Have you tried bypassing the spark plug and cap by holding / fixing the H.T. lead just away from a metal earth when kicking the engine over?

Also have you a wiring diagram because some small engine bikes have a separate coil for the ignition, lighting and charging the battery?

Yes and there is no spark

I don’t think there is a separate coil but I will double check thanks

When you switch on and NO horn working do you have any clock lights or rear lights or a live feed to the flasher unit? ? ?
A wiring diagram will show if the c.d.i. needs a live feed from the battery along with signals from the magneto / pick up coil.

Also check your earthing points. On my old turd scooter one of the straps from the engine was poor and all sorts of weird shit started happening Smile

Rear light works, clock lights will try to when kicking over

Check them yourself. Mechanics can lie or be utter morons at testing.

You should be testing resistance across the 3 phases on the stator as per the manual. Also check the pick up coil for continuity.

The most obvious thing to check would be the sidestand switch. Then it could be stator, pick up coil, (both easy to check) coil, ( easy to check) lead or plug, then CDI, then wiring between the above.

Ok thanks will check all the above myself

Yeah I seem to have a lot of exposed wires from previous owner just cutting wires and leaving them
