Hi,
I bought a flip helmet online. It arrived today. When the flip is closed it's a bit tight around the chin. Would I be better getting a larger one or is a tight helmet safer?
Thanks
Steve

the hat needs to be secure and not loose.

all the hats ive had do loosen up a bit as you wear them.
so while it might be a little tight when it is new it will give.

so is the hat really tight to the point of hurting you head ?
or is it just a little snug ?

Only you can decide if it's going to be too annoying.
It might be that make or style causing problems, and a size larger might still do it.
It doesn't want to move about on your head especially when new.
If the one you got fits apart from your big chin a size up will be too big.

If the excessive chin pressure is coming from padding you can try squashing it down with really hard thumb pressure.

A good shop wouldn't let you buy a helmet that is tight on your chin. If you've got the opportunity to return it f.o.c., then do so and go try a few on. I've struggled in this area for a long time. Chin bar too close has spoilt my helmet choice many times! Roof boxxer 9 was the last dissapointtment!

If it hurts, it's too small. but if it just feels tight then it fits. It will become lass tight over time when the padding compresses a bit.

Will all my lids cheap or not, my chin is a close fit.
It will touch if I move my jaw forward to it's full extent and I've always wondered if that was how it was meant to be or not.
Its not a problem but I wonder if a dual sport might be a bit safer in a light face plant scenario.

A good fit of a new helmet should cause your teeth to just graze the inside of your cheeks when you open and close your mouth.
If you bite your cheeks it's too tight. If you can't then it's too big.

Don't crush the padding to fit. The padding (polystyrene) is the main working part of the protection system. It crushes under the force of your noggin hitting it in a crash. The crush allows your heid to decelerate relatively slowly. That allows your brain to slow down too and not mush against the insides of your skull. Physics init.
So don't compromise your padding.
The chin thing is a problem too. If you hit the front of the hat it could push your lower jaw back and break that too.
Really a crash helmet should feel normal comfortable and not like bad fitting shoes that you wear in.

I've been wearing the helmet for 45 minutes tonight and it's not too bad. If I move my mouth left to right the helmet moves that way as well. If I open my mouth I feel my chin bones slightly tight on the helmet. Does this sound about right?
Cheers

Shouldn't be able to get any more than two fingers between your forehead and the gap on the inside upper of the helmet.

Rocking it back and forth (one hand on the chin area and one on the rear) there shouldn't be too much play.

Pulling at the chin guard heavily in a swift downwards motion there shouldn't be a lot of movement.

Cheeks should be puffy and well into the cheek pads.

I'd try all that with the strap undone. Once you know your head measurement in cm (see your previous helmet chart size if unsure) you can generally order that for most brands that will fit you, but trying on is always best.

Pain in the helmet around the forehead area when new is expected, and can be off putting. Decider comes as to if that pain goes away or causes you to want to stop riding. Certain ear plugs irritate me to fcuk while using my helmet so its all about finding a balance.

Just ride and don't think about it, new gear putts me off sometimes because I'm adjusting to riding with it. Go for a long ride and see how it feels once you're done.

Go to a shop and try lots of different lids.

Then you'll find which helmet fits you the best..

Nah - do as others say and go try some lids on.
