 |

Is there such a thing as a route planner that picks motorcycle-friendly roads? Google Maps etc. seem to choose based on one of two options, either fastest (end up on motorways) or shortest (farm tracks). Turning off "motorways" doesn't help either as it just tries to route you down dual carriageways then. A mate has a BMW bike sat-nav that has a "twisty roads" option that seems to do a reasonable job of this, but I'm hoping there's an online equivalent somewhere.
Is there such a thing as a motorcycle-oriented route planner anywhere? Be really useful if planning a touring route or to a new destination. ____________________ TG. |

A quick Google throws up https://kurviger.de/en which, on a sample of one route I just randomly invented, seems to do a good job of staying off of multi-lane highways. ____________________

You and a good old-fashioned map/road atlas that shows elevation. And a bit of research on t'net about potential destinations. Still my preferred method, which has served me well over many years. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

Waze has a motorcycle mode, although I've not used it so can't comment on how good it is. My TomTom Rider 400 lets you select the level winding/hilly you fancy, but I really only use my satnav to find my destination for the last part of my journeys. ____________________ Chances are quite high you are not in my Monkeysphere, and I don't care about you. I agree with this the most. Exploring new destinations is one of the things that you can massively over-plan for, or overthink, really quite easily.
I have an app on the phone called Scout GPS that works without network. In the past I've just ridden and stopped/looked on that for a general direction / main road numbers and then continued on.
Tried SatNav but never really got on with looking away from the roads, and found road signs far more useable. Phone in the pocket with headphones may work better but I'm not really a fan of the idea.
I usually go from major city to major city and then ride to any smaller places from there, and return to head off somewhere else if needed.
In terms of roads worth riding around on instead of how to get to them I find a quick search on Google maps -- from the air, not street view -- easily points out ones that look worthwhile. Street view it, make a note and go from there. ____________________ The do it all, T̶h̶e̶ ̶b̶r̶o̶k̶e̶n̶ ̶o̶n̶e̶,̶ ̶T̶h̶e̶ ̶b̶i̶g̶ ̶l̶u̶m̶p̶,̶ ̶C̶h̶o̶n̶g̶ ̶N̶o̶o̶d̶l̶e̶ |

Green-top OS "road" series maps. Small enough scale to plan the whole route on one map, Large enough scale to see all the roads and a good bit of topography.
In my experience, you can often find a B-road that goes from one place to another but the only place you'll find it is by looking on an actual map.
Here's a route for you to test. Go from Gretna to Abington. The B7076 runs all the way from one to the other but you can't get a route planner to take you on it. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. I did the 2010 Round Britain Rally on my 350 Bullet. 89 landmarks, 3 months, 9,500 miles. |
