Is there a road atlas that's more detailed than 1:100k? It doesn't have to be paper-based. Maybe it could be downloaded onto a device - though ideally it would take the same representation/cartography as the OS Landranger series, e.g.:

https://www.stanfords.co.uk/content/images/thumbs/018/0182138_sample_OS_50kLandrangerMaps_carto.jpeg

I notice on the OS site that you can get a subscription if you have a smartphone - about £14 / quarter or something.

But could you get a 1:50k road atlas for sections of the UK - e.g. the south west, or the north west, etc.? The 1:100k maps miss so many c-class and back lanes off they're almost useless unless you just want to go via A-roads.

I appreciate phones and sat-nav devices can do this kind of thing very well - but I dislike being dependent on signal strength, and I would prefer a bigger screen than most mobile phones and similar can provide. A tablet with a downloaded 1:50 series of Landranger maps on it - say 10 or 20 of them would be my preferred format.

You can download the O/S app onto a tablet. And view the maps that way.
Download onto device and signal is not a issue.

I use/d Sygic GPS Navigation & Maps, works/ed alright, all for free, offline maps with actual navigation in mind. IIRC the navigation mode even had traffic hazards, jams, roadwork... warning, it got the data every time you got online (wi-fi) and kept it for the offline use.

What I did. Thumbs Up

I also ended up buying the hardware version because I prefer them.

Sounds about perfect tbh. Cheers. What's the best device for this in your view? What would you recommend for someone like who's into laptops but doesn't like smart phones so much?

The 1:250 OS road series don't miss any metalled roads and have quite a bit of topographical information too

You can download open street map tiles onto a device. I downloaded a whole load of them of Portugal on a small linux notebook because the mapping is utterly appalling there and we were going mountain biking. The cycle overlay is best because it has contours.

Is this a green-laning thing?
In the Landies I ran OS MemoryMap on a lap-top wth 12 sat marine GPS areal plugged in. I think that was what was in the chavic to find your place TBH, you may have seen it.

For green-laning through, there ate 2-3 issues at play.

1/ unsurfaced routes aren't oft marked on 'road maps'
2/ you have to hunt them down on the ground even if you have a map!

For web-based resource, Trail-wise/ Way finder is GLASS/TRF''s combined database of green-lanes... you need to be a member to get full access... you are a member, aren't you? But with full access, you can sown-load their 'marked' maps as opverlays. This is a bit like the old days of taking your Landranger OS map down t'pub and copying some-one elses status checked GL's onto it in pink-highlighter pen.. only the data bade is 'live' and supposedly updated with status and surface conditions by members (IME it's about as dynamic, real-time and up-to-date as BCF's regional section, here, but still... better than nothing.. ish!)

In the Rangie, worked great----ish, with an internet dongle to get updates that never came.... 'cos the car is tall, and you have the room for a full size screen. (Only niggle is mag-mount for the GPS sender on aluminium rood, but still.. all praise blu-tak!) NOT so wonderful on a bike, where you dont have the space....

Memory-Map does have a version to run on small devices, like PDA's and tablets, 'B-U'T' IME the screen size IS the limiting thing to usefulness.

Ultimately, for practicality, I would go oldskool-ish, and use Mem-Map / MS routefinder and maybe googlke-maps and a few others to plot an actual route from here to there, then I would print it off on the printer, to either stick in the Road-Atlas as a page-marker, or tape to the top of the tank on the bike.

Advantage here is that you can scale the bit of map you expect to want to suit, and say here to Leeds print it 100:1, then do a section 25:1 or whatever, to show the last 'block' or the actual green-lane.. cos few are over a mile long anyways... and either put that on a separate bit of paper, or print it as an inset on the large scale map.

Which rather makes the electronic devices a bit redundant. Has advantage that batteries dont go flat on you on bits of paper, and you don't tend to cry so much when kidling kicks one out the car door into a muddy puddle!

Just a couple of thunks on the topic; you have to fins what works for you, but ghint here is eggs in a basket, and not rplacing relience on just one electronic bit of kit, let alone expecting that to do all the work.

I do remember seeing a massive amount of squiggles on a computer overlay of BOATs you'd collected RE Wales. But to answer to question, this isn't really about green-laning. Without trailering bikes, I've sussed out the ride-able radius (i.e. 30-35 miles). Aside from getting monthly pdf attachment updates of TROW restrictions from my local TRF group, I've also sussed out what is and isn't fair game on 90% locale. On the odd occasions when I've fallen foul of locals' knowledge of RoWs etc. I've just dismounted, de-lidded and tried to make nice. I.e. apologised, explained, and reassured. My bike's deathly quiet, and my style is far more about motorised pony trekking rather than balls-out enduro. Generally, we (me and a mate) get by.

I'd have to be up around Thirsk, Helmsley or Whitby to be on new stuff and that's trailer territory imo. Probably not going to happen this year now. And maybe even later in '20 rather than sooner. Tow bar has been fitted though. : - |

So no - I don't feel the need for maps RE green lane shenanigans. I get what I need by triangulating my preferred sources - the excellent Streetmap site, local knowledge, the RoW officer at EYTRF, Google Street View (another incredible resource), and my preferred route recorder ViewRanger. The rest is in me noggin.

This is all about road riding - say, out towards Richmond, Hawes, North Yorks moors, or in the Peak District, or south beyond Horncastle, Lincoln etc. It would be so useful to have a digitised equivalent of 10-20 1:50k maps to whip out at a T&P stop.

Talkytoaster does 1:50 scale maps (Look & Feel he calls them)

https://talkytoaster.me.uk/

And the shop https://shop.talkytoaster.me.uk/

I use the free one on my Garmin GPS but it's not as detailed

Edit: Google maps, if detailed enough, also alllow you to download specific areas. Might be enough?

OS Maps App is pretty decent and subscription is something like £20 a year. I find the offline map stability a bit patchy, but it's probably user error. As a keen walker, I find the UK-wide maps of 25k, 50k and 250k very handy indeed though

Ooh that would have been helpful when I was stumbling over Long Mynd the other day, trying to convince the kids I knew wherewe were. Contours are invaluable.
