Insurance makes my head hurt!

Okay, apologies but this is yet another insurance one....

I have the old Skoda with 7 years NCD in my name with my wife as named driver. I own the car and my name is on the V5. I will occasionally drive this if I need to lug crap the bike can't handle.

My wife has her new car that she owns (and her name on the V5) which she'll mostly drive. No NCD for either of us on this. She'll mostly be driving it.

Now (deep breath) I'm trying to work out the best deal. Would I be better off transferring the Skoda NCD to the new car, have myself as main driver and the wife as named driver even though I'll only rarely (if ever) drive it or is that no big deal as we're married?

The meerkats are telling me my NCD might get me somewhere between £50 and £150 off a quote. Okay so the new car is cheaper to insure but then I still need to insure the Skoda but I've just used the NCB on another car...

Just to complicate things more I could do with comp insurance on the new car but the Skoda I could probably get away with TPO or TPFT.

I never was good at juggling

<addendum> maybe it's worth paying the extra to put the new car down with my wife as primary driver and she can build up her own NCD?

Why not get multicar with both of you as named drivers? You can use the NC on whichever car you want and build up the NC on another.

A caveat to that though, Direct line multicar is separate policies with a discount. Admiral is (or was when I was with them) all on one policy. Check before you buy.

Just spoken to Direct Line:

Question: does it matter who is the policy holder and who is the named driver? [I pointed out my wife will be driving the new car more than me]

Answer: no, it makes no difference to us for a husband & wife policy

Question: can I use the NCD from my old car on the new policy? (And then I'd have to start from zero on the old car.)

Answer: yes, you just can't use your NCD on two different cars.

Can you not get a husband and wife policy that covers both cars, allowing you to use the NCD for both?

Maybe worth having a word with your existing broker and explaining the situation or contacting a more specialised insurance broker.

since passing my test I have used aviva

cheapest for me anyway but I have both my cars on one policy

my wife is a named driver on both and I can use them both for work use if needed

I looked into having a classic policy on the one but it worked out more expensive anyway

Not sure about which Insurance companies you have rang, But in the past I have got NCD`s mirrored when a partner was on mine,or part,
She technically made a few years as she was only on the policy for a few years but I had 17 yrs NCD at that time, they just gave her 9, which I believe is the maximum discount anyway,
So It may be worth a ring round.
