By now he would have posted detailed statistics about how the risks posed by ISIS compare to the risks of being a motorcycle journalist.

You've been a member for six years and you are saying that?

The humour on here is black at the best of times, if you don't like it, mumsnet calls. Thumbs Up

I would have said GB Bikers but they folded years ago. They hadn't got a sense of humour either.

Nothing to do with how long anyone has been here. Nothing gives you the right to make fun of John Cantlie. Shame on you.

John Cantlie's sister probably googles his name. She might well read this thread. Maybe some people could consider deleting their posts? Unless it would amuse them to upset the sister of a man who's been jailed and tortured by Isis for years.

Much the same as that free climber that died recently: yes, it's all very sad that someone got kidnapped by Is Is but "warzone photographic journalist" is a job title that implies risk Shocked

Tbh I've built up a tolerance to 'abusive' ratings thanks to mdp. Turns out racism is good for something. I still think he's a cunt, though.

Free climbers do it for fun, war photographers do it so that victims of war don't get ignored by nations in a position to help them.

As the story goes, he got himself into a situation in which he was way out of his depth; he was captured twice. The second time, they decided to keep him, it's said. Since then, if the news is to be believed, Daesh has tried to use him as a bargaining chip, demanded a ransom, and has used him as a propagandist. At the same time, his well-heeled and well-connected family have used every opportunity they can to seize the media bull by the horns and exert pressure on the government to act to free this guy (who's a thrill-seeker or philanthropist, depending on who you believe). This must have jeopardised foreign policy. However, the government resisted paying a ransom for him or anyone else, and rejected petitions to risk the lives of others by attempting an extraction by special forces. The US did the same with James Foley. The UK was/is officially at war with Daesh. Upping his public recognition and popularity here in the UK must surely increase his value as a hostage as well. In the meantime, as the story goes, he has been brainwashed by Daesh. What a story, eh. What can we know from over here? The family obviously doesn't expect us to know his whereabouts. What they expect is for us to clamour at the gates of Parliament for some kind of special dispensation for him - again, increasing his political and propaganda value for Daesh.

Really messy story and something seems off in this. Officially, he has no organisational capacity (freelance war reporter?) and his family has done nothing to dispel that impression. His father was someone, though. And, as a "nobody", I'm not sure how he got the gig to escort Princes William and Harry through 1000 miles of African enduro. Was there an ad in the papers for that job? What steps have his family taken to petition more influential people rather than randoms on the internet? The whole business is as clear as mud. If he has/had some intelligence to share about the UK's enemies, it must be obsolete by now.

Not sure who this guy is but from his Wikipaedia page, it looks like he went above and beyond normal effort in order to get himself into a real mess, not once but twice.

Anyway, topic moved because I don't see what it has to do with motorcycles.

Undinist, if you edit the thread title with NSFW tags, it'll stay off google.

Watched his vids from Bikes Aloud - he seems like a nice enough guy. I saw his famous picture in the Telegraph from his story when he witnessed Assad's tanks rolling into the city.

Shame he ended up getting kidnapped twice.

I don't know anything about the bloke in question or his motives, but I suspect that in many instances the above is a gross oversimplification or just plain wrong

I'm surprised he's still in one piece tbh after getting kidnapped for a second time.
