Hey guys, having some problems starting my bike.
When the starter button is pressed, the engine is trying to turn over but just sounds like it struggles for a second then fails. The headlight dims and screen goes off while engine is turning also. The battery is a few years old so I've ordered a new one and in the mean time charged the one I currently have. But I put it back on the bike this morning and had the same problem. Only seems to start if I engage the throttle a little and once running it's fine. Turn it off and try and start it again and I get the same problem though.
Any advice or help appreciated, the bike is needed for work.
Thanks

Yeah my dad reckoned sticky or dirty starter motor, problem is I know the 1250 bandits have problems with starters. Apparently they start to go between 15k-20k. Mines at 24k and was fine up until a week ago. Then all of a sudden I'd hear a weird electrical noise just after starting, like the starter motor wasn't disengaging immediately when the button was released. And now this. I've heard a new starter motor from suzuki is in the region of £400 too, and I don't think that includes labour.

Without testing the voltage with the engine off and running you are just throwing money at it randomly.

There are two reasons that the battery can be down on power, the battery could be fucked or the charging system isn't.

If it were the starter kit wouldn't turn until hit.

I would guess battery from your symptoms but really, really get a £10 multimeter and check out how to use it on utube or get someone to show you.

Honestly, you could narrow this down in 30 seconds with one, saving you time and money.

I cannot stress enough how useful they are.

Volts. Get a voltmeter on it. Battery access is very easy on the Bandit.

Average life of a Bandit battery is a "few years", so you probably
need a new battery.

Symptoms are weak starting and resetting of the time
clock when you operate the starter.

Charge the new battery at the recommended rate before
you install it. As above, get a voltmeter on it and check
the charging system is ok.
