I've been riding for about a year and half and I will still occasionally leave my indicators flashing without realising. Also it usually doesn't take long to find new riders in London with the same trouble.

Anyone know if there is a signal to let people know? If not I suggest an open and closed fist repeatedly would be good.

The group I ride in we use a similar action, it's either as you describe or your 4 fingers beside each other opening and closing against your thumb.

I can't recall exactly, summer was too long ago Razz

Actually I like your version more, I've used the fist sign at cars that haven't got their lights on.

Ride a BMUU and you wont EVER have indicator issues. I've had a GS Adventure for a year now and not had a single issue.

Opening and closing your hand as if it was a glove puppet mouth.

I thought that was the Nick Nick sign for the police in the area?

I tend to use a pointing finger/forearm waved horizontally from side to side.

Nick Nick used to be with back of hand to forehead as in flashing blue light. Also Jim Davidson used it for the police.

Jim-Davidson's 'Nick-Nick' sign.
Open and close fist.
Over the helmet = police, beware
Over the hand-grip = Turn your indies off.

Would someone petition the Highway Code to get a standardised set of hand signals, far too many options.

Don't forget to include nodding etiquette and sticky-out legs.

Did I mention the BMUU self cancelling signal system? If I ever use a signal now that I'm a BMUU rider.

Nazi tractors have stupid indicator buttons in stupid places and you know it.

You don't have a problem because by the time you remembered where the button is, you already made the turn.

They also only flash the one on the side nearest Poland.

It is usually only to someone behind me that I make this signal, and most often when I am riding with them anyway. I'll hold my hand out to the side but kept low down (arm at 30-45° to the vertical) and do the open/close fist thing, making sure to splay my fingers in a facsimile of radiant light. Works most times.

My 1991 Yamaha XJ600 had self-cancelling indicators which worked pretty well, although on a motorway they tended to cancel before I had reached the exit slip I was indicating for.

Repeatedly opening and closing the hand usually, or if they're following me I turn my indicators left and right a couple times to get them thinking. Usually works and I see their indicator turn off in my mirror.

I thought to notify of plod you tap/touch your helmet with an open palm. Seems to be the norm among anyone I've ridden with so far anyway.

Waggon drivers always used a 'thumbs down' in an up and down motion for speed traps, always did the same on the bike and used to get a nod in return in most cases. Other bikers used the same signal, so always assumed that was the bikers accepted method of warning for loitering plod.

As for indicators, fuktifiknow.

I do the signal the same way you would gesture talking. With that you tell people that their turn signal is ON, their headlight is OFF (day time running lights mandatory), or their high beam stayed ON. Even pedestrians give you this signal when you have the headlights OFF during the day time.
