Chains!

Since february i've adjusted my chain 3 times (once by alex twice by me) the fucker is stretching like a bitch.

What things cause a chain to stretch quicker than it would normally or is it just for the bin?

Rust, wheelies, rubbish make of chain, worn sprockets (such as a quick wearing alloy thing), rear wheel out of line, etc.

What are the better makes/types of chains/sprockets?

(bloody goddamn siezed link is a feckin new chain as well bloody thing i dunno its just one thing after another grumble grumble grrrr)

I find DID the worst. Compared to IRIS, Regina and AFAM.

They stretch much quicjer than all of the others, but i've only used the 42? and 520 versions.

If you actually oiled/looked after your chain it would last longer.

Actually I really mean that, give your chain a really good clean and good lube, when I seen it it was in a terrible state.

I should of been operated on this morning but because of the incompetence of Direct Line I now have to wait a week and miss a week of university. Direct line you bunch of tossers, anyway...

Well today I realised my chain isn't black, it's silver! who'd of thought it hey?! After much time spent on the floor cleaning the chain as best i could (it's rusted a lot on the inside part of the chain so that still looks dark. Coated the chain in some fully synthetic chain lube and away I go! Just one thought though, who makes the best chain and where's the best place to look? www.manp.co.uk/ don't have much choice!

Oh yeah, whats the best, o-ring or x?

DID are probably about the best, but nothing wrong with EK or Regina, or half a dozen other makes.

X ring is better in theory. In practice probably not really relevant as you will have killed the chain in other ways before the seals become an issue.

Are renthal chains worth the slight extra?

Ive heared (from several people) DID and especially the regina chains are quite poor, the latter being dangerously so.. though apparently DID chains are made to the same spec as the honda standard chain and they ofen last 40,000miles (on a ta)

Nowhere seems to sell chains right off the shelf though which is a pain :/ Just got myself a 3in1 chain tool for £35, bah, i miss shaft drive

I'd be interested on good online places to look for chains and whatnot too...

Not heard anything wrong with DID chains, or Regina. There are fake DID chains floating around which last about 10 minutes.

No idea about Renthal chains. No experience of them, and as such I would treat them as a dodgy cheapo until proven otherwise.

How long should a typical chain last, my chain is a 420 size DID and was on the bike when i bought it. I've since done 1000km a month and the chain forever needs adjusting. But some idiot rode into the back of me, stripping the thread on my right hand adjuster so it cannot go any further back. What can i do?? Get a new adjuster?

If a chain is kept regularly lubricated, they can last anything up to 50,000 miles, chains don't really stretch, it's the wearing of the pins that causes this effect

A 420 chain is hardly that strong.

I would say to replace the adjuster as soon as you can. That the adjuster is wrecked suggests that you probably have the rear wheel out of line and that will wear the chain more rapidly.

420 DID's are wank. My derbi one would need doing after every trip when ridden two up. Get an OE one or IRIS.
