Wanting a reality check here

I have a spare CX engine I kept as spare/just in case
I've never need to use it and its currently partly disassembled
and I'm thinking of flogging it on
Years ago you couldn't give a CX away I loved it cos you run these oft despised old things for pennies
Nowadays that cafe racer fad seems to have pushed CX bits up into ridiculous zones.
Q:
Is it worth my while to reassemble the thing and get it running with a vid/proof of life
or just flog it as is?
Currently I cba, just want it out of the way.

Warning:
CXphobic rassis comments will mean you get struck off my christmas card/letter list
so you'll never find out how well Clarissa and Tristan did in their GCSE's Gymkhana.
Nor Marjories new Goat yoga and Vegan Paleo recipes!

If you have the space to hold it for however long until it sells, then I'd either make a proof of running video or offer a no-quibbles guarantee, and put it up on Ebay.
If you just want it gone, then the buyer has to make a wild stab in the dark by taking on the risk, so your asking price would have to be low.

Fair point. If you have the skills to get it running you broaden out your potential customer base from proper mechanics to bearded hipsters with money to burn Wink

Thanks
I have had a look around Ebay and currently see one guy asking £250
for a seized lump and another with a running one for £750!!
WTF?
Previous Sold listings aren't giving me much of an idea, there doesn't seem to be many about right now.

If it's only going to fetch a oner or so as is then
I'm kinda leaning towards the 'show it running' as long as its
worth the effort and cost

Snag is, since I took it apart, much of it has been thrown in my
'precious things' box with all the unobtanium/rocking horse shit
CX stuff.
Sorting through that stuff is a chore I've been avoiding for probably to long

On reflection I'm being a lazy bastard and building it up will
help clear the decks and get me a better price.

How much phaphenization is rebuilding worth? Work out your cost per hour and materials. (Gasket kit, oil filters)
Then you get a figure of what it's going to 'cost you for proof of life.
Or....
Good photos of the critical areas, any issues you are aware of and flog as is.

While I'm on, anyone want a remus system for an 04 BMW R1200GS it's all there except the gaskets.

If making money is the object, you shouldn't be putting it together more, you should be taking it apart more. Then selling those parts individually.

Yes I see people doing that but what a faff.
I'll still have boxes of stuff hanging about a year from now
after all the goodies have gone.
Nope, its as is or built up.
I can make the gaskets and have a lot of seals already to hand
but I've stuck it on bench and going to do a check to see if I'm missing anything expensive or unobtainable.
The crank and heads are all undisturbed so is the gear box and clutch, so its just the front and rear cover stuff I need to find.
Now I'm looking at it, it doesn't seem quite the chore it seemed earlier when it was a pile of stuff in the corner.

Not so long ago I was hunting for a DRZ400E engine. I missed out on a still boxed, unused engine. The price was £500 though I would need to fetch it from Inverness. Try searching for a used DRZ engine and the prices are nuts.

For the above, on the bay of evil there's a company in Germany who will rebuild a DRZ400 engine for £1200. That's gaskets, bearings etc. Perhaps you could price your rebuild going off what other places will charge? Then again, if all you're doing is putting old bits back in I dunno!

A rule of thumb when flogging anything:
Its only worth what it's worth to the owner and what a customer is willing to pay.

I owned a car reasonable to ask £11K for.
Swathing changes to insurance class made the pile of shite worth less than £8K (trade against a new car).

Nothing anyone can do to increase £ they receive without adding value such as.

A 'real' warranty (keep the cash in your pocket until warranty expires)
Possibly a 'proper' quality painting.
Free Postage/Delivery money up-front
Offer to install the beast. 🤮

EBay is as good a gauge as anywhere.
Why I've not sold my BMW R1200GS expanding panniers and, Remus System.
There's phaph involved and I'm not always home to phaperate things like that.

But the O.P. knows all of this.

I wouldn't bother getting it running. As long as it 'did' run when you pushed it in the corner it will be fine. Perhaps a compression check so you can add that to the ebay ad for credibility and then move it on.

BTW I have a bunch (well two) XJ600 (pre-divvy) bottom ends going for a song.. one has a busted rod though..

Makes me wonder whether I should do anything with the DT125 bottom-end I have Thinking

Probably worth >£200 in bits, £100 as is and >£300 running (but then I'd need a barrel and piston.)

I often get the feeling that when I want sell something
suddenly it aint worth shit.
Then, when you need to buy a part its some twat stating
'rare classic cafe' and offering a rusty pile of nuts and bolts for silly money.

I agree something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it
but now thinking I'd kinda like to get it running for my own satisfaction.
I reckon I've found about 98% of the parts I need to reassemble the lump as I've squirreled away many serviceable parts over the years as well as keeping most of the stuff I removed.
I'll make my own gaskets for a fraction of the cost of shop bought
and may just need to buy a few oil seals and some new HT shoulder bolts
