Low Cost In-Helmet Music Player

Hi,

I think I'd quite like something that could play music while I'm riding. Not sure how often I'd use it once the novelty wears off. Also I'm aware that with background noise etc it's not going to be great audio quality.

I just wondered if anyone else had tried something along these lines, or any suggestions etc.

Try singing as you go?

You can make in-ear earplugs out of silicon putty and build a set of ear buds into them. Plenty of how-tos out there. Most people I know use their phone and those headphones with a controller on the cable.

I personally couldn't concentrate well enough with music on too. I even turn the car radio off if I'm hammering it.

I listen to music a lot on longer solo runs, not so much day to day.

I prefer a Bluetooth helmet kit to normal headphones because I can still wear my ear plugs.

Fod Sports M1S Pro costs about 55 quid on ebay and I can heartily recommend. Sound (and comms) are good up to around 80mph and the battery will last all day in either phone or intercom mode. Use them for work and liked them so much I bought two more for my own use. The expensive Sena and Scala kit is a little better, but not greatly IMO having used both.

I just use bluetooth £20 jobbies from amazon to my phone.

If I don't have music on, I hate riding. I get bored.

People listen to music in cars, no reason you can't on a bike. Just keep your eyes open, not that hard.

Earphones into phone. Ones that came with my Samsung were fine, now using skull candy ones.

£20 in ear headphones (quite fond of the JVC ones from Tesco).

Not worth spending more, I've tried the more expensive Sennheisers but they're no better at sound isolation than the cheaper ones and with my usage they all die in about 3 months anyway. Besides, since they're background music so it's not like you're going to be quibbling over sound quality.

I use mine for 2 hours a day, every day. Music pauses at the press of the call answer button on the headphones, so the very rare occasion I need to cut the music I can do so quickly. Even at full volume I have no issues hearing what's going on around me so generally the only time I need to cut the music is if I'm talking to a person.

Noise isolating earbuds are the way to go. Keep the sound quality but block out all the wind noise that'll damage your hearing. Can highly recommend the Etymotic ER range (some are crazy prices, but even the lower end ones are amazing quality and block most wind noise out).

Thanks for all the comments. I have some normal earplug type headphones that I can try. I would have thought it a bit of a faff putting the helmet on over the top, but can give it a go. I suppose I was really thinking of something I'd build into the helmet, either Bluetooth for choice, or wired if necessary.

I don't actually have an audio source either, but I assume I'll be able to use my phone to see how it works out.

There are various speaker options, from cheapo eBay velcro in-helmet speakers, up to £250 bluetooth wireless headsets.

I've tried a mid-range headset which was great for phone calls and intercoms, but naff for music.

These days I have virtually no use at all for intercoms and headphones do the rest just fine. For phone calls I just tuck the microphone into my cheekpad - I've had people comment that it's clearer than my normal phone microphone.

I don't tend to do much in the way of phone calls to be fair, it'd be a bit annoying if I did as I can't call that way, but I can receive calls if I need to.
