Posted: 22:53 - 23 Feb 2020 Post subject: Accidental gear oil in 125 motor? |
 |
|
Hello, I own a 2014 Lexmoto ZSX 125 (carb) and realised the oil was a bit low. Went to Halford's and got some 10W-40 to top up, but realised it said gear oil on the bottle instead of motor oil once I'd poured some in. Below is a link to what I got.
Google is really confusing me as it says that gear oils have some other sort of ratings like 75w90 and that 10w40 should be engine oil, but the bottle says gear oil.
Should I just let this oil burn out (as I read it will since it has something like a lower boiling point) and top up with motor oil?

Thanks for your advice |

Cut a rectangle in the side of an empty 4 or 5l plastic container and use that as a drain pan (I used to use an old oil can, but if you don't have one, all sorts of things come in 5l plastic bottles). Also makes it easy to pour into a different container via the spout so you can take it down to the oil bank.
Or a disposable tinfoil tray for roasting tor roasting turkeys etc. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

Surely the product is intended for something like my 2-stroke DT? I have a gearbox that is separate from the cylinder 'cos... like... errm.... 2-stroke You know what I mean But the "gearbox" does contain the clutch on most bikes. Don't think the Chinese have started ripping off Ducati dry clutches lately
Anyhoo, if it was some sort of "car" oil you could maybe panic a bit, but not over 150ml. Actually the "panic" should be what sort of oil was in the bike to start with: ~5 years it's plausible to be the factory mineral (another cynical jab at Chinese 125 owners, soz!)
IMHO it's good practice to keep the same brand of oil going for your bike. Don't know what's in there? There's your cue to dump it and the filter and put known stuff in.
Easy oil collection:
