Hi guys,

I just passed my CBT a week ago and now I'm planning to get a 125. I just need the bike to commute, about 9 miles a day, on a A road (50 and 30 top speed).

I can't afford to buy a used one because I don't have enough money to pay in cash, so I'm planning to apply for finance and pay a deposit (up to £300).

I know I can find used bikes on dealerships, but I couldn't find any affordable useds near me (I stay in Linlithgow).

Also, I have zero experience with mechanics, but I watched lots of tutorials on YouTube and I think I can manage the basics, like lube the chain, apply an anti rust spray and sorts of things.

I'm thinking about to get a YS125 from Yamaha, but I don't know if the bike is reliable and safe enough to ride on the rain, which is pretty common on the Scottish weather. (I don't plan to ride on heavy rains or snow, just to be clear).

PS: I know I can also save the money on the 125 and go straight to DAS to get a full license, but I don't want to do that at the moment.

That said, what do you guys think? Any recommendations?

Thank you very much!

Point of order: the CBT isn't a test it's a piece of paper that says you're received training. I suppose they could withhold the certificate and you could count that as a "fail" in the colloquial...

Errr, what was the question again? Oh yes!

Welcome to the bike life! Very Happy

I'd advise care before jumping in on finance. Long term that's A LOT of money. Keeping it low they stretch out the deals for 5 years. Lifetime for the cheap Chinese bikes might be less than 3 if not looked after, seriously.

Given you'll have to stump up a deposit and the first month better to save up £500 or so if you can.

As to reliability in poor weather they're all about the same; no particular brand is dramatically better than another in the 125 bracket. All you could say is the Yamaha would have better tyres from the factory than a Lexmoto.

Save your £300 and another few hundred for a few months, buy a used low miles YBR125 and done. I would not finance a 125.

What, from Saltire in Edinburgh?

Anyway, the YS125 is the replacement for the old YBR 125 which was generally recommended to be the commuter/first 125. My son had one on loan, while his Rieju RS3 (a "sports bike") was being repaired... he said it was OK, it could keep up with the traffic, would do 65-70 with nose pressed to speedo, was economical, etc. He was impressed that he could see behind properly in the mirrors. He said it felt spindly and a bit lighter than his his RS3 and would (obviously) not go as fast. He did about 500 miles on it, no problems, easy starting (don't tough the throttle, just press the starter), and did not seem disappointed. My only real observations were that the tyres were narrower and the forks much smaller diameter, and it's "simpler", but then again it's not the same class of bike. There isn't anywhere very sensible to stick an "L" plate on the fromt, so this one had a cut-down one stuck on the front mudguard, and a slightly-cut-down one above the headlight (as in pic).

If you can do that, plus CHECK/CHANGE THE OIL AND FILTER, adjust the chain tension (easy) at the appropriate times, you'll be doing yourself a favour.

I thought about it, but I need the bike asap because I don't have any bus stops near home and I depend on taxis/lifts.

When I went there they only had a "sport like" Aprilla, that I'm not interested, and a KTM Duke for £3,500 or so.

Check and change the oil and adjust the chain tension shouldn't be a problem, to change the filter I need to watch some videos because I don't have a clue on how to do it.

It looks as if they've got them on their website, but £3,000 Unsure whether there's haggle room if someone else sells them in your area. I might be inclined to get the screen and topbox or try to blag them if there's no haggle room on the price, it won't cost them a lot after all to give them to you, they will be useful, and may increase second hand value. Maybe there's a completely different bike cheaper new, but it might be good to buy a "name"? Don't know.

I'm an old fart now and haven't been in the OP's position for a long while; but is the world now really so mad that the only way for someone who's skint to get some wheels is for them to buy a brand new machine (something which personally I've never done in my life?)?

Is this a dealer finance problem? What about a personal loan from the bank or zopa.com, that sort of thing?

That's what I wondered. The only thing Ive ever bought on tick is housing. I have no idea how finance works, but look at this from Saltire:

https://yamaha.saltiremotorcycles.com/yamaha-news-offers.aspx

Free Datatool tracker (fitting £99, don't the ££ add up fast!)
Motorcycle Finance - 2.9% APR (Deposit? Exit/other costs???)

That's the one I was looking into. Is about £300 deposit and £50ish during 36 months for the YS125 OTR.

How does that work, then? I suppose you have to make some sort of lump sum final payment?

Yeah, that's a PCP deal, so running the numbers there's a final payment of £1058 (totalling £3474), or the OP just hands the bike back then having handed over by then £2416, and walks. Oh, and the £50-ish monthly payments are actually £59.

Madness...!

I didn't notice the final payment. Mate... Thank you for that. Not gonna happen, hahaha. I need to think in something else.

Hijacking the OP's thread..... Here: https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/car-finance/personal-contract-purchase/ it talks about these PCP things, and also mentions getting a "personal loan" ( https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/car-finance/personal-car-loans/ ), for £3k Admiral seems to be recommended.

What's the real difference in the OP's case? At first sight, it looks as though he'd be paying £474 to get the bike and own it after 3 years. Is that right, or are there hidden price-inflating things?

"I know nothing of borrowing money)" Smile
