So, after a few winters my brake caliper joint bolts are looking terrible, and a definite eye sore on my bandit 1250. I was wondering is there a way of replacing them without splitting the caliper and having to go through the hassle of bleeding the brakes. Can I take out 1 bolt at a time, replacing it before I remove another or will this not work. Thought about cleaning them up but theyre in pretty bad condition, I'd rather just replace them with stainless ones

I wouldn't use stainless. Given that they're in the line of fire of all of the salt and crap in the roads, you're asking for galvanic corrosion and galling which will be fun if you have to strip them down. Replace them with passivated high tensile bolts if you must.

You'll probably get away with replacing them one at a time, but don't complain if you do end up having to bleed the system. Razz

I'd resist the urge to correct the issue, as you see it, if it is indeed purely cosmetic unless you have (a) a garage or (b) the money to put it into a shop.

I cleaned my rear brake one day, left the cover exposed at the rear overnight and came out the next to find that the brake pad retaining pin had some surface rust on it alongside some on the brake disc. There really is no winning at this time of year, and if need to work outside I especially wouldn't be attempting a change of fluid -- or risking a job that could lead to it.

Perhaps I'd buy the parts now, but I wouldn't attempt it until summer whereby you could just crack the banjo hose off, split the calipers and work on it as required (good reason to check the small rubber o-ring that sits between the two calipers, if yours has that).

Wire brush and Hammerite?

When is the last time the brake fluid was changed out?

Like 10k miles ago, but I've just rebuild the calipers on my gixxer as the pistons were ceased up. Really don't wanna go through all that again, at least not for a while.
Speaking of hammerite, I bought a tin yesterday, smooth black as so I could tidy my forks up. May not be a bad idea to give the bolts a quick rub down and paint over 'em.

I love that I asked a temporal question and get quoted a distance Wink My point would be if the fluid's over 2 years old it's not a heartbreak to dump it and bleed in fresh stuff.
