Hello,

I'm (hopefully) going to be selling my Hornet soon and am on the look out for a replacement(s) - eventually turning a sports bike into a track bike and also buying a cheapish greenlaner.

Here's how I see it panning out:

£2500 on a sports bike
£1000 on the greenlaner

Anybody got any suggestions, I'm open to pretty much anything?

Thumbs Up much appreciated Thumbs Up

£2k on a 400 sports bike

£1.5k on a green laner.

Or even better buy a decent green laner then buy some SM wheels for a grand Mr. Green

Just blow the lot on a supermoto and have best of both worlds Cool

hehe, anyway, you sound like you're into sports bike track days.. and if you want to green lane, then I think as suggested above is best idea.. ZXR400 track bike (one for sale in exchange and mart too..) and then a TTR250 or similar for green laning (budget around £1.5 but don't forget insurance...)

Do you need the green laner to be road legal?

Thanks for the replys guys!

I've just had a look at the KLRs on Ebay - not bad at all. I think the difficult bit will be the sports bike, there's seems to be little difference in price between a:

ZX6R (my first bike, gotta love them!)
ZX7R (true track day weapon) or
A decent 400 (nice and light to throw around)

Although insurance will be a factor, it shouldn't be an issue so I haven't got a clue where to start!

Thumbs Up

Green lanes are technically roads, and you need to ride on the road to get to green lanes usually, and often find yourself crossing main roads between lanes.. green lanes all traffic rules apply, i.e. yes you could technically get done for speeding Shocked and you will get done for no insurance etc if you ride on them illegally.

Green lanes are roads.. And you more than likely will get caught riding illegally, and if you don't then you'd still be one of the twats fueling the ramblers fight to ban bikes/4x4's from using them!

In that case I don’t know what you mean by green lanes. We don’t have any around where I live. I only ride on private property and I don’t know of any public highways that are green lanes. Are what you call green lanes public footpaths? Who actually own these places you are talking about?

Good link. Thumbs Up

It seems pretty complicated where you're actually alowed to go. Don't think there are actually that many 'green lanes' around. Personally I think green laning would be pretty boring as you're strictly not allowed to go off track.

If I were you I would get a motocross Wink Thumbs Up

Green laning can be a bit bland but stick some 17" road wheels on and it makes laning more fun Very Happy

No but you have to cross busier roads, and ride on the road to get to green lanes. Personally I think anyone that rides green lanes illegally is a cunt Middle Finger Evil or Very Mad

Sports bike for the track, I know it is a sports tourer but the cbr 600 is the best, keep away from 400's to much hassle on parts.

I think you'll find that most 'tracks' or off-road areas aren't public highways and don't require the bike to be road legal. You shouldn't ride on private property without permission though. The type of plcaes that are mentioned in the links above would be natioanl park areas. I don't see much point going there anyway.

You can legally ride on BYWAYS. There are miles and miles of great byways criss crossing the countryside. However finding them can be tricky and they often merge into bridle paths in parts, which you are not legally entitled to ride on.
The best way to find them is with a OS map, and I would suggest going with an orgainised group like the TRF if you are new to it, as they will know where to go in your area.
It is most definatley NOT boring riding on 'green lanes' anyone who says that has obviously not found where to go.

I wouldn't recommend spending a fortune on a first off road bike, you will crash. Alot.

*Ahem* KLR 250 for sale!

I went down a track in the winter last year on the KDX. I had been down the track in the summer and it was easy.

Started down the track and it started getting real muddy. No problem I thought, ive been through loads of mud in wales........ Until it went deep enough to pull off my chain!
It was really thick nasty stuff. I had to put it down and then refit the chain. THen it wouldnt start again Laughing Laughing Laughing
To deep to walk it out. i took off my trainers (they were full) climbed through a hedge and walked in my socks through the fields back to the road and called the mrs.
Went back in the evening with my mates to pull it out Embarassed
Bugger started then didnt it Laughing must have starved it of fuel or something. or maybe i was just too knackered to kick start it Laughing

That wasnt boring. Wink

Private land is not green laning, he wants a green lane bike thus it must be road legal, if he's getting a non-road legal bike then the ONLY places he can ride it are tracks, enduro tracks and private land with owners permission (but you can still get into trouble for that if you're not careful!!)

Riding illegally on green lanes is stupid, green laning is on the verge of being banned as it is, it doesn't help with people riding on them illegallly.. green lanes is the name for all byways etc which is where all green laning is done, hene the name.. anything else is off roading and normally Rolling Eyes done illegally or at tracks.. illegal off roading is destroying green laning, I'm sure you understand being that you race MX.

Thanks again for the replys, so far I'm getting this:

- Going greenlaning is not as easy as I thought! But I do know a farmer who doesn't mind you ragging it about on his land. Ah, the joys of the west country!

- I'm going to go for a ZX6R (F1/2/3 or G if I'm lucky) for the sports race bike, although I'd really like a ZX7R - have to see how the money goes!

So, next question:

What 'cc' can I go up to for the greenlaner before it'll make a big difference to my insurance premium? I'm 26, two years no claims...
