As I pay monthly for the VED on my car and my bike and we are not allowed to use the vehicles for anything except essential journeys,I am going to SORN both.Mrs Fizzer has a car which is more frugal than my car so can always use that as and when required.

Please excuse my ignorance, what’s VED?

I don't even bother to SORN mine after storing it for winter. Just saves hassle of paperwork when you want to go for a ride if you get a good day over the winter. Still wouldn't bother with it now - not like it's a large sum coming out each month.

I thought about SORNing my bike but then thought I might actually use it for an essential food or medical journey. Plus they extended the MOT that was due to expire soon, so that means I can tax it in June.

I've never really SORN anything, it's there to ride when I feel and it would be a pain to tax online. It's staying insured so might as well pay the 17 and 70 a year to keep both in commission.

Might start riding it next week given its been sunny as fuck.

I'm a key worker and both vehicles are registered business use, so I'm keeping them on the road. Not sure how long this is going to last, and we might be drafted to work at the hospital, so I would probably use the bike as it'll be free to park onsite. Idea

I've got to go to the hospital pharmacy in a couple of week, race suit and lid on I'll go.

Car is so difficult to park in Leeds. Whereas on the bike I can park directly outside.

My other bike I normally bring out around now, I wont bother.

Batteries on the trickle charger.

One question though, I've never had a bike stand for more than 6 months. Am I best starting her up once a month, riding up and down the drive. Or should I just leave it. The bike is bagged up in the garage.

I would think if the battery is on trickle charge it should be fine for a few months...unsure about a six month period though? I guess if you don't have anything else chugging from the battery it should be fine.

I only SORN if I'm pulling the insurance as well. The tax isn't exactly expensive for a bike.

Depends on the age of the battery. I had a 2016 CBR500R with its original battery sat outside my house for 13 months without being started once during that time. Not locked in a heated garage or anything! Kept saying to myself I should run it up for 30 minutes once every few months but never got round to doing it. When the time came it started up (just!) without the need of a jump start. I was shocked as I've had cars sat for two weeks and not start before now. I would say if yours is on trickle it should be fine for over a year Thinking

Whether to SORN and cancel insurance on non essential vehicles is really down to individual circumstances.

My bike for example would be £7.96 per month if I were to pay for it monthly and the insurance would have been £18.14 per month to insure if I hadn't failed the credit rating check for the premium finance and had to pay it all up front LOL.

That's £26.10 a month to keep one bike on the road and obviously cars are going to be more than that.

Some of us are lucky enough not to have been impacted too much by the COVID-19 pandemic so the thought of going through the agro just to save £26.10 a month is more than it's worth.

However some of us may literally be on the breadline living hand to mouth on a daily basis, many self-employed and employed layoffs. Government benefits are taking months to come into effect. That £26.10 could possible feed a family for a week if they were being thrifty.

And that's just one example for one vehicle. Some of us may have multiple bikes and cars but when it comes to the crunch, both partners being out of work, realistically everything could be cancelled except maybe one car or one bike.

It's all relative really.

SORN.
Personally I know I won't be using the bike again until lockdown ends.
The procedure for declaring SORN is literally just to enter your V5 and vehicle reg numbers at https://www.gov.uk/make-a-sorn and job's a good'un. If you're going to do it, now is of course the time or you'll have to pay road tax for all of April.
If you were to ask most people just to enter two numbers on a website in order to receive a payment of £7.58 they'd probably go for it; and I just did so. If the lockdown extends to at least 3 months, as now seems likely, then it's at least £22.74 back, so why not? The retaxing process is the same obviously, with the addition of entering a payment card number.

Insurance is a more tricky issue; not sure about that. You (I, anyway) probably need to retain fire and theft cover; also most insurers will probably charge an admin fee to make the change; loss of NCD may be an issue for some, too.
