Which boots

Guys I’m in need of getting some new boots, budget isn’t great but I’ve narrowed it down to these two. Just wondered if anyone has any experience of them. Will be worn with textiles or jeans

RST Trachtech Evo III's are a good shout. Built on a strong foundation in the form of the first generation of RST Trachtech Evo Boot's that were worn by plenty of riders despite what brand name all their other kit had.

I've not tried the drystars but the summer Alpinestar full sized boots that I have (full size being what the two type of boots you list are -- ie: not ankle boots) seem softer on the front making it easier for feel, and therefore easier to shift with.

The RST III's offer decent protection for the price and work well for commuters or day trips alike. Quite a do it all in one boot at a very sensible price. I had the insole on my L/H boot fail which made it feel like the boot was getting wet on the inside but a new pair of insoles solved that. Genuinely the only niggle thus far.

The drystar looks like it would be more comfortable, but the RST III's offer more protection simply because their a mix between road/track focused. More protection across the rear and sides of the boot (drystar has protection on the side but looks like it would be easy to push in towards the foot).

Depends what your after. If I was buying blind I'd go with the III's all day long.

Do keep in mind, however, that the weather today was high 20's. I'd get a pair of vented full sized boots, too (perhaps the NON-WP version of the RST Trachtech Evo III's). You'll work up a stink at this time of year wearning WP non vented boots really quite quickly (unless you've already got NON WP boots).

My last RST Tractech's delaminated in 9 months, were tatty as hell by 3 months. Importer (Tweeks) didn't want to know, RST said deal with importer.

I currently run A* Corozal. Zero issues whatsoever in 6 months. 2 very different boots though.

My main issue with boots over the years has been the grime separating the sole from the toe area. Alpinestar short boots (smx 2) in waterproof form were my go to boot until the smx 6 came out with the sole curling up at the toe. Have had smx 6 goretex for 4 years and they've taken all that the UK weather can throw at them and done a fair bit of walking around in them too. Only replaced them last month.

tractech evos are absolute shite. Switched to TCX and they're 10312038919 times better.

I wear Gaerne G.Durbans. They are both warm and waterproof and very comfortable while riding and walking around as well.

Alpinestars all the way. Never had anything else, comfy to wear all day and last for years.

Def Alpinestars. Only last 8 years I've had waterproof SMX-4's, SMX-5's, SMX-6's, the race SMX-plus's and I'm now commuting (well, I was) on the slightly cheaper SMX-S's. All done well, even the ones I had picked up second hand. Crashed in them countless times, had boot between bike and road, come off on track (in the Plus's), always held up well and held me up well.

Reliability wise, I found the soles wore thin after about 18 months of daily use, then once they've worn through a hole they're no longer waterproof. I've had nothing else whatsoever fail on them.

Do spend a bit more for the 'WP' waterproof version, or Goretex variant and they'll never let you down.

TCX is my recommendation. I've got a pair of 4 year old infinities which I've used daily including lots of walking about and all day wear. Starting to get a little worn looking and the soles are wearing down but they are still water tight and serviceable. Comfy to walk in too.

I've also got a newer pair of TCX Baja's which are pretty much the same with a little extra protection for off road use. Equally well made. Both are goretex and i have never had wet feet, even in hours of torrential rain.

They are, however, fucking expensive. Worth it IMO as, looked after, they will outlast other boots by a large margin. If you only ride occasionally I could see them lasting a decade.

Ive been wearing TCX 5 Gore Tex boots for about 15 years (on my second or third pair) and they get worn every day and are almost totally waterproof. I dont think I've ever paid full price I tend to buy a new pair when I see a retailer selling off the previous years marginally different model when a revised version is made.
