it's a pulsing noise started a couple weeks ago but has gotten gradually louder. I've since abandoned driving it till I get this sussed.

with 34k on the clock  (~10K of which was me doing pizza deliveries in the last 4 months so it has worked quite hard)

fresh oil in the engine

Pulling in the clutch lever makes no difference



thought I'd post here in case one of you has experienced similar.

Any help/ suggestions appreciated!!

I'm willing to say there's terminal engine wear in a bearing. Its hard to say because the speakers on this pc are a bit shite.


34k on a small engine like that doing deliveries is pretty good going. I'd ride it till it got even worse then bung another engine.

Fair point alot of people forget 125cc engines only take 1l of oil. Theres not a lot of forgiveness in them if they start using any.

I am going to go for a "main bearing gone problem". You should find this fairly easily to confirm. Sounds similar to a scooter which had worn mains a while ago.

First use your trusty long-handled wooden spoon/screwdriver or what-have-you to use as an engine stethescope, or even buy one for a few pounds[1], very useful.

Use it to listen to the crankcases, each side, wherever's closest to the main bearing. IF that indicates a problem, choose the worst side to have a look, if something else seems possible, post! You will have to get the casings off to check.


The generator side should be fairly easy. Once you've got it off, try to pull the end of the crankshft up and down, by laying hold of the generator rotor. Try in several positions, by rotating the thing, and also trying front to back. If there's any play, the main bearing's shagged.

The clutch side should be easy too, and similar, but of course messier.

If it is a main bearing, I would be inclined to replace both (guess: £40), and also check the big end carefully, since there will be a lot of swarf that's been pumped around the engine. Everything will need extensive and very careful cleaning.

You might be best to go for a complete crankshaft (maybe £100?) plus gaskets, cleaning stuff etc, or even a used engine in good condition (eBay says maybe £250-£300).

Can't remember, but some variants of this engine have an oil strainer that almost never gets cleaned as part of servicing.

It shouldn't get clogged, but again, another potential cause of oil starvation.

Doesn't really help OP. Sounds like damage already done.

after all your advice and a bit of digging, I decided it wasn't something friendly like the cam chain. It was probably a general engine/ oil issue. (it was a category b and I had absolutely hoofed it and probably should have been doing weekly oil changes considering. - lesson learned)

I didn't feel up to (and wasn't going to pay someone) for a full engine rebuild so I Sourced a good newish engine and put that in it, it now sounds better than it ever has & I have the old damaged engine to experiment with and learn stuff with.

just need to get rid of that horribly loud custom exhaust the previous owner put on it and this will be an awesome little bike again.

anyone know good places to get genuine/not stupidly loud or chineseium exhausts for ybr125s?

I should think an OE one is quite expensive. Poke around for a used OE one or buy a "compatible" Chinesium one and accept that it will do a couple of years or three if you look after it?

IIRC £90 ish for an EFI one with the EGR take off pipe
I put one on for a guy whos YBR I often fix and he's never complained
about it
£50 odd for a non EFI one where you'd have to blank off the EGR
which shouldn't hurt .
