Doing fork seals and the stanchions have a few small nicks so I'm going to send them off when the world is back up and running, before re-assembling them. Any suggestions for decent places to send them to? RWU forks so not too complex.

Thanks for any help.

Probably cheaper to buy a pattern set.

Worth noting that re-chroming is a particularly environmentally harsh process, much more than buying new stanchions.

Looking about £170-190 from a re-chrome and about £280 for pattern parts from what I can find so far. Re-chromers like to make a big deal about how the finish/quality is superior to aftermarket, any truth in this? Wemoto and others seem to sell Paolo Tarozzi, any experience of these? The bike is a Suzuki SV1000 so hardly an odd or difficult size to make.

Hadn't considered this if I'm being honest. Is the process of manufacturing the steel etc just as environmentally unfriendly overall?

Take a look on Ebay/Ali Baba for some Chinese pattern - I got some Chinese pattern forks for a Honda at half the price of the Tarozzis - and they were absolutely perfect reproductions of the OEM forks - I was very impressed.

Given that hard Chrome plating isn't great to start with. (Most electro-plating methods are going to use salts or oxides of the metal required. Hard chrome plating uses Chrome Trioxide which is highly toxic + various acids and so on...) You have to add onto that the original chrome needs to come off the fork first so more harsh chemicals. Basically you'll end up with a lot of waste chemicals that could easily kill a kitten Crying or Very sad

That's a fair comment - I expect you are right.

On the other hand if you needed to splash out 200 quid on a part for your motorcycle tomorrow but you could save 100 quid to get the exact same part from China what would you do?

Philpots did mine and they had more of a satin finish than the mirror I was expecting.

Yes - more than likely!- As you know companies like Honda outsource a lot of their parts manufacturing to China and other Asian countries.

I bought a Chinese alloy generator cover for a Honda engine which was indistinguishable from the original part - same with a replacement regulator rectifier which was cheap but performed fine.

Although much cheaper than original parts the forks, gen cover and reg/rect all looked like surplus items pulled directly from the OEM manufacturing supply chain.

If you're happy to use cheap pattern parts (location of manufacture irrelevant) then so be it. I'd recommend against using any safety critical replacement parts other then OEM. A visual inspection won't tell you if the part is good enough, and much like cheap rearsets for example, the quality of material used can often mean they fail when in use.

Even non-structural parts can be a problem. At the time I could only get some cheap fork gaiters from China (for the size I wanted, and they were still wrong!) and now the rubber's gone all weird and sticky Sad

No biggie that I've wasted a few quid but the work to swap in decent ones is annoying.

Yes - I agree - I would not argue with any of that - It's very much a personal judgement call in these situations - I am happy with the forks - the quality of the machining, chroming, the weight etc are all identical to the orginal items - if they were at all shoddy in any respect I would have put them straight in the bin - but yeah - if I was working on someone elses bike I could not take that risk and would fit OEM because I could not expose another person to the potential risks you mentioned.

I've decided to get them re-chromed as its a bit cheaper and I prefer keeping the OEM items in but don't want to fork out (sorry) for a new pair from Suzuki. Surprisingly the place I contacted, recommended above, is still open as they do medical equipment as well so can get them sent off asap.

Now to strip the calipers as well whilst I'm at it.
