Hi

I bought my 2007 speed triple in 2017, and a few months later my stator went. So when replacing it, i did the recommended RR upgrade and fitted the shindengen FH012AA from Yamaha, but i have gone through 2 more stators in the last year, and am wondering if i have done something wrong or if anyone has any advice on what to check. I have tested the RR and all readings are correct. It is so infuriating!!

Thanks in advance for any help

Mate had a similar issue and eventually found some well toasted wiring between the stator and reg/rec. It had overloaded at some point and was intermittantly shorting between the toasty wires inside the loom wrapping.

Worth a look?

Might also be worth sticking a cheapo LED voltmeter on the dash so you can keep an eye on it going over voltage? Less than a fiver.

My VFR kept having charging failures after a hard thrashing and it turned out to be the (upgraded) reg/rec getting toasty-hot due to being bolted to a hot piece of frame under bodywork. I solved the issue by drilling some holes in the panel to increase airflow. I do have a voltmeter, gives a little peace of mind.

I agree with Mr. Stinkwheel. A voltage indicator is indispensable if you have a questionable charging system. I also have experienced issues in the wire cable between the stator and reg/rectifier. Kept melting the inline connector. I must have replaced that thing 4 times because I did not want to "violate" the original, precision engineered Honda cable. One day I was having some new rubber mounted and I mentioned my issue to the mechanic. He suggested I bypass the connector and directly wire the stator to the R/R. "We do it to our Ducati race bikes all the time. Here, look at this one!" Blasphemy! One day I finally had enough and took his advice. I used barrel crimp connectors and wire shrink to directly connect the R/R to the stator. Solved the problem once and for all.

I know we are talking a 13 odd years old bike but check there isn't a valid recall for that on the Triumph website. I'm sure there was one back when I had my Striple and just maybe it's still they will still honour it.

I've found Triumph very good on rectifying faults even many years down the line if it's a known one but I have a very good relationship with my dealer which probably helps.

It's probably clutching at straws but you never know.

Edited to note, I'm pretty sure Marjay had the same problem with his Striple. It might be worth wait to see what his input is.

The Reg Rec took out the stator on my 2009 Street Triple R. However, it was entirely replaced by a helpful dealer after a recall in about 2013 or something like that. Once it was done, there were no further problems with stators.

However, I did have a problem with the main loom connector just behind the headstock, the 12v power pin burned out, so I bypassed it with a heavier gauge cable and bullet connector. It's been fine since. This would point me towards a bad pin in a connector somewhere. I believe there are two main loom connectors, one just to the left rear of the headstock under the tank, and I'm not 100% sure where the other one is, but I think it's behind the engine under the seat somewhere, probably near the reg-rec?

Sounds like a bit of a nasty problem but it does also sound different to the one I had, so apologies for not giving you more insight.
