Hi,

I'm about to fit a couple of spotlights to a bike - does the MOT specify that:

The spotlights need to be wired to the same switch that activates the headlight high beam (so that they come on simultaneously with the headlight high beam).

Or is it ok to fit a separate discreet switch for the spots so that they can be switched on/off independently of the headlight?

Many thanks for any advice.

Why not both. So they only come on with high beams AND when switched on?

I'd go battery > Fuse > Switch > Relay > Spot.

Use a SPNO automotive relay (also called 4-pin). I'd use a take-off from the hi-beam telltale to trigger the relay so if it buggers up, you don't lose the lights.

Relay pinout:
30- feed from switch.
85 - Trigger from hi-beam indicator
86 - earth
87 - output to spot.

You can get fused relays but I preferr to use a fuse nearer the battery, or you may have an existing "spare" accessory fuse you could use.

If you have canbus wiring, the above may not apply.

Spotlights are auxiliaries that you'll probably not be doing a fantastic job of aligning Wink In which case you should have them on their own switch so they can be disregarded for the MoT.

You can get the relay trigger from the main beam wire behind the headlight.

Done it loads of times.
