Hi guys!

So I have got my US import GS750 firing on all cylinders at last! I will be working up to getting it an MOT over the next month or so, but I was wondering what I need to register the bike in the UK and in what order I need to tick things off.

Given the bike is 40 years old, does this make it a classic?

The only paper work I have is the Certificate of Title from New York State, is this all I need for now?

Is the first port of a call getting an MOT on the bike?

Cheers!

So what you're saying is you imported it illegally? Google search NOVA (Notice of Vehicle Arrivals.)

No I bought the bike off ebay from an importer, I guess I'll have to chase him for that paperwork!

If the bike is 1980 or older, it will be considered a classic.

Basically means its tax and mot exempt.

You don't technically need an mot but it would be in your interest to get mechanic to look over the bike to make sure its safe to ride.

You'll need it registered on the DVLAs system before you can do anything first.

I haven't imported a bike before, but I have registered some, a subset of the information here:

https://www.gov.uk/importing-vehicles-into-the-uk/registering-an-imported-vehicle

I would be inclined to read some of the references there, and maybe chat to DVLA by phone, they're usually very helpful.

Theres nothing ilegal about having an imported bike not on the system, nor on bringing them in.

You will need a NOVA certificate, and that needs to be dated or applied for within 14 days of arrival or fined daily.

Find out from the guy you bought it from. I wouldnt call the DVLA til you know some facts.

I would. Phone them, explain you want to buy a bike from the USA, or even say you have done, you won't need to supply details, and ask what you need to do, and what you need to do to register it (EDIT: Registering it could, from memory, take six weeks).

If you don't find out, you won't know, and they should know what you need to do!

There's no need to expect the Spanish Inquisition!

Oops.
