So the other day I rode through a long puddle (off road) that a stick told me was just under a foot deep. Turns out there was a hidden trench further along that was much, much deeper. Almost bike drowning deep. I made it through (just!) but my nice TCX goretex boots ended up full of water from it coming in the top.

I thought I'd dried them out but obviously missed a little dampness as one of them is now absolutely howling.

Any tips for getting rid of the smell? Chucked some cat litter in a sock to see how that goes.

Cheers.

I've got a couple of suggestions for you, I've had to deal with this kind of situation with smelly sailing gear.

The boots are are probably dried out enough, the smell is from remaining bacteria that's gathered in the lining.

1st suggestion would be fill up the bath tub with soapy water and sink the boots in the water, make sure to squeeze and shake out all the nasty swamp residue.

2nd suggestion would be grab a febreze bottle and attack the insides vagariously, I've used it to get rid of other smells before and it's fairly effective stuff. Tesco supermarkets usually stock a heavy duty version with extra odour elimination.

3rd isn't that effective but I've found it helps a little bit. Wait for a sunny day, leave them outside to scorch and cook off the smell, some of the bacteria will die in the heat.

You could do worse than try white vinegar.

I used it once when I had some kittens who had peed behind the sofa, instead of in the littertray and it started to smell of cat pee, so I spritzed vinegar around the whole living room.

It smelled like a chip shop for about half an hour, but within the hour not only had the smell of the vinegar gone, but so had the smell of kitten pee.

You could try getting one of those spritzer bottles and using it to apply white vinegar to the inside of your boots, then leave them out to dry in the sunshine.

Laughing
Ah schweetie, I don't need a man magnet, I seem to already be one, I just need to adjust it so that that attracts the correct sort of man Laughing

Meantime, there is a French fragrance brand which produces an [even more] controversial fragrance entitled "Secretions Magnifiques", and which everybody else seems to hate, but which I love. I might treat myself to a ridiculously expensive bottle of that for my upcoming birthday. Cool

But I recommend that OP tries the white vinegar.

Diluted Dettol will kill all the bacteria and disinfect the boot. I have done that with gloves that went the same way and the smell was completely removed.
I'd trust that with Goretex more than white vinegar.

Wash and dry your feet.
Apply an antifungal + anti bacterial cream.
Wear fresh socks.
Let footwear dry out properly after wearing.
Dessicant bags shoved inside the footwear speeds the drying process.

Wash the liners of the footwear in a disinfectant solution and pour the solution into the boots and drain out to help kill any organisms lurking.
(Allow to dry completely as above.)

If wet boots look like they might be a regular issue, you could diy a boot dryer.

There are loads of examples on youtube as well.

This. Although most of what's suggested is unlikely to do any damage, GoreTex is quite a fragile substance so needs treating with care, not to mention any glues etc. in the construction of the boot. Ask the manufacturer should get some sound advice. Thumbs Up
