I probably won't ever bother to do it, but has anyone here used fabric protector spray on their riding jeans or hoody / shirt?

Just thinking that the less you soak up in a light shower, the quicker you dry out.

I've used Nikwax TX stuff to "showerproof" things before; it's only ever of limited effectiveness though, especially at speed because the effective hydrostatic head of rain can be quite high on a bike.

Not familiar with Scotchguard, but if it's based on some sort of oil/hydrocarbon type residue, will it make your jeans very slippery?

This stuff kind of works but probably needs reapplying more regularly than I bother with.
You will always get damp areas eventually, if only from wicking up sleeves and round your neck

Kinda what I thought, although I hadn't though that about making the jeans slippy. Might do the Kevlar shirt as it won't get washed all that often.

Pretty sure you're not supposed to wash Kevlar jeans either to be fair, I'm sure I read something about a 5% loss of protection from each wash when I first got mine.

Nikwax stuff does work.
If you know how it works then you'll work out that flying into road spray at 60+ MPHs will have the effect of ramming the filth from the road into the fabric. (particles of tar, aggregates, rubber, metals, oils, shits, spit, snot, and other assorted ingredients found in road film)
That barrage of shite will compromise any water repellent finish.
Clean treated fabric can repel water dirty fabric loses its repellent properties. 😭

My kevlar lined shirt says it's not to be washed, only wiped down with a damp cloth... Neutral Not even handwash apparently.

Never heard that before... here's the washing instructions for my Hood jeans, which AFAIK are lined with the equivalent of Kevlar (a trade name). It does mention that you shouldn't hang them up to dry in the sun though, which is a well-known caveat for Kevlar

Out of interest, why the caveat about not drying in the sun? If it's UV exposure that does the damage just thinking I tend to wear my jeans when the sun is out!

The Kevlar has a layer of denim over it protecting it from the sun, same way you don't get sunburn through your jeans!
