I have a Honda XL 600 with a gear shift that wont return, I can get the gears by hand and select neutral ok. My question is: can I inspect this without removing the engine?

I take it you mean you press the pedal down and it doesn't spring back to the centre position.

I doubt you'd need to go as far as taking the engine out but first thing I'd check is the shifter springs. I don't know your specific bike but I'd expect them to be on the clutch side (so need to drain the oil.)

What year BTW?

I say yes
drain oil
Clutch cover off (RHS of engine)
Clutch off (you will need to correct tools)
Gear leaver off
You can now withdraw the gear shift shaft disengaging the shift arm (spring loaded)
The return spring is against the clutch side end

I done the many times on Honda engines may even have done an XL600 but not sure

The return spring failing is far from unusual!

Before you do that, make sure the lever isn't binding on the case. It's a dirt bike and things get bent.

I disagree.
Here's a pic of an '85 XL600 case and you can see the pin the
selector spring acts on inside the main case
I dont see how whipping the clutch out will give access to that

Mind you, Op doesn't help by giving any details other than just XL600
No model no year etc so its possible a later bike/model will have a different setup

Pretty sure the spring inside the cases is the kickstart return spring. Always in a pain in the arse to replace those. Gearshift return should be under the left hand side crankcase cover.

If it is that sort of XL600 (and it looks like there were a lot!) then spring 11 in the diagram is definitely a case split. What's spring 10 though?

Item 10 is a 'Shifter reset spring' according to the fiche

https://www.cmsnl.com/honda-xl600r-1987-h_model50181/spg-shifter-reset_24624ka4000/#.XuPbIXh7nIU

Having worked on a few Honda dirt bike engines then the shifter mechanism can only be accessed by splitting the crankcases.

Yeah, BCF has its moments.
I like it and half the time I have no fuckin idea what they're all talking about.
But it sounds terribly brainy.
I kind of hope that if I pay enough attention it will soak in, kinda like osmosis.

Show us some pix of your XL and its progress.
I had one of those in 2003 for about 3 weeks once, before it got nicked Crying or Very sad
Look forward to seeing how you get on.

Cool Thumbs Up

Looking at the map you seem to live right on top of me - north side of Croydon. Feel free to bring it round for a poke.
