So i got a call today from a distressed 16 year old "THE TEMPERATURE HAS GONE OFF THE SCALE AND IT STOPPED DEAD, IT STARTED THEN IT STOPPED AGAIN"
So i got him to get his dad to bring it over to me, instantly noticed that someone had used a copper Central heating coupler to join the coolant pipes together from the radiator to the cylinder head, which had burst apart....
I replaced the pipe completely, got the bike started, but according to him its not right, its not as fast... now i also replaced the carburettor with a spare one, so this could be the issue, Just wanted some re assurance that he's not melted the shit out of my lovely brand new engine, i think he heat seized it twice.... Is this enough to take the edge of the piston rings, or should i percivere tomorrow and do the carburettor, mess with jetting and needle position until i can get it to run perfectly, or is the damage done?

Yea im fine, just irritated, ive got a great attitude usually, just dont like the assumption im not a mechanic, or havent built loads of 2 strokes, car engines, motorbike engines, tractor engines, dumpertrucks the lot...
So i have stripped the engine again, as i KNEW i would have too but i was trying to avoid it last night i was tired out, it was a long day.
the bike had heat seized twice, as i knew it had, and i knew it had done damage to the piston and barell, Ill hone the barrell as its not nicosil plated, and get a piston, there is scoring, most only minor but there are 2 scores that are deeper than i would like, so a new piston is a must.
Thank you all for your help and sorry for being a bit blunt, its been a tiring week or two

Is this a water cooled 2-stroke with a scooter type CVT?
I'm curious as to how the cooling system could fail so catastrophically and no one noticed but kids today I guess ____________________ Royal Enfield Continental GT 535, Husqvarna Vitpilen 401, Yamaha XSR700, Honda Rebel, Yamaha DT175, Suzuki SV650 (loan) Fazer 600, Keeway Superlight 125, 50cc turd scooter |

Bro. don't take it personally. You did a great job just to get that Gilera running so well. Seems to me that the lesson to be learned here is about a 16 year old who needs to bond with his (her?) machine a little better before flogging it so hard. Hopefully, the lad will learn to appreciate the stresses inflicted on that tiny engine, and come to recognize the sounds, vibrations, smell, gauge indicators, and responsiveness of a well running machine. Hopefully, he/she will learn to back off before a problem morphs into full blown seizure.
BTW - ever hear of piston knurling? Look it up. It may be possible that a quality rebuild could be done with the piston you have. ____________________ History shows again and again how nature points out the folly of men - BOC |

Thanks for your reply,
Yeah HE was going round, showing the bike off to his mates and going out with his friend with a 70cc Kitted Road Legal Motocross bike of some sort, i made him strip his own bike yesterday, the whole thing, engine out, head and barell off, and showed him the VITAL IMPORTANCE of coolant in an engine, and to ALWAYS look at his temperature gauge, he said "oh so this bit round where the piston goes should be full of water, and the water went away so thats why it stopped" I said "yea thats exactly it, the water around the piston circulates with the water pump constantly pushing it through the radiator and back to keep it cool, when there is no coolant, the engine gets to stratospheric temperatures, the piston expands and heat seized instantly" he said "wait so, no water, the piston was moving at full revs, and it just stopped instantly because it expanded?" i said "exactly, and you did that 3 times, your lucky it didnt damage anything else"
"Ok then, ill keep an eye on my temperature all the time now so i dont do that again"
So i might be getting through to him.... LOL!!
The reason i was spam posting on here was becuase i was at my whits end with the MITHER AND STRESS of a demanding 16 year old who is "bored and notihng else to do, my x box has broken so this is the only fun i have now" sort of constant garbage and mither, so i apologise for replying after getting to stressed out haha
So after ive done this gilera, ive got a stock 50cc one to do, get through the MOT, re build my YZ125 that my friend got on and flattened in 5th gear max revs without warming it up, an RG125 Gamma that im turning into a cafe racer, I re built that engine completely and is ready to go back in the frame, Im making a little 25/50cc quad bike remote control for my friends 2/3 year old as he is scared of pressing the throttle himself, and various other projects, so to say ive got my work cut out is an understatement haha
Thanks again all ____________________ Hoda CBR 600 FX stolen from stalybridge 2017/2018 black

this thread makes me miss my DNA125
apart from the electrics...
and having to fiercely defend it to my mates..."it's not a scooter dammit!" ____________________ Current: 2010 WR125X, Carrera crossfire-E.
