I have a 2019 Tracer 900 GT with 3500 miles on it. I want to give it it's annual service and gave my local "lightweight" Yamaha dealer a call. They tell me they can't go near it as they are not considered a "full franchised" dealer and if they did it would invalidate my warranty. They even spoke to the Yamaha rep that happened to be there at the time and he confirmed this. Surely if they use original Yamaha parts and the recommended YamaLube it can't invalidate the warranty can it?

I think that when the dealer completes the service they then log on to the manufacturers system and enter details of work carried out on the bike maintenance history record.
Perhaps your local Yam dealer is not authorised to login, so they could carry out the maintenance but not enter the details on the bike history record.
I think that if they carried out the work and stamped your log book you would be ok on any subsequent warranty claims.

I have just checked my Tracer warranty handbook, it says - The Company guarantees that throughout the Warranty Coverage it will replace any part of the motorcycle which has failed through either a material defect or incorrect factory assembly free of charge providing

1. the motorcycle bears the original manufacturers identification marks

2. the motorcycle is maintained and is used in accordance with the instructions herein.

3. the item to be replaced is either part of the original equipment or a genuine replacement part, with repairs and/or replacements carried out by an authorised Yamaha Dealer in Europe.

Warranties are not worth the paper they are written on and main dealers are often shit. If you have found a mechanic that you trust, use them.

I've mentioned Tippetts being dropped as a Honda dealer and their statement, when I went in there: as long as you use manufacturer approved parts and consumables the warranty is fine. "BTW, all our mechanics are Honda trained!"

About the only way the manufacturers have got some wiggle room is to say that any work done has a VAT invoice. I dunno if that requirement has ever been tested in court but TBH, I'd let them have that.

ive just bought another honda msx brand new and im doing the service work on it myself, that will invalidate the warranty but meh.......

if the bikes potatoes itself due to a manufacturing fault within the warranty period ill argue that in court

What does a main dealer service do beyond basic checks and oil/filter change anyway, at least in the early years of the bike's life (before other stuff starts to need looking at)?

Fuck all.

I've bought half a dozen new bikes and I always get the first service done by the dealer. That covers me warranty wise for the first year.

IME if a Jap bike hasn't gone wrong in the first year then it's not going to until bits start wearing out by which time it'll be out of warranty anyway.

The earliest problem I've had was a starter motor after 4 years and a fat lot of use a FSH/Standard Warranty would have been by then.

They can’t legally decline warranty if the work has been performed by someone else, long as you’ve got proof it was done in accordance with the manual. Also can’t deny warranty for an issue by claiming shoddy work on a different part of the bike.

I wonder if people are forgetting to make the distinction between bikes and cars here.

That old stuff about 'As long as it's approved parts etc' is true. There was an EU ruling to mean that dealers can't invalidate warranties if a service is done properly with approved parts at any dealer or mechanic.

With one caveat. For cars.

It doesn't affect bikes, and the bike manufacturers can pretty much do what they like as I understand it.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

In fairness to the manufacturers being faced with an engine that's failed because the oil's not been replaced (dodgy Dave said he did it but the numpty owner doesn't really know) and it all starts getting very awkward. Much simpler if their own lads do the work and then it's a nice simple equation. Oh, hoovering up overpriced work is just a happy coincidence, trust me Wink

If the quality of work was always good and the prices reasonable (my Skoda dealer seemed to manage both okay) then no one would have need to test such presumptions in court but here we are.
