Another 'Next Bike' Thread

I've being muttering for a while now about getting an MT07. I don't think anyone would dispute it's a cheeky little fecker

However, doing my usual "musta missed a meeting" I recently saw a picture of an SCR950:

All sorts of things about it somehow remind me of the DT (tank, spoke wheels, etc.) and the more I read about it the more insane it sounded. "Totally off its chops" as MCM would put it. An utterly stupid bike - I love it! However, at north of 250kg wet I think it might be a little more than my elf-like form could manage*

I've already dismissed the Vulcan as far too predictable a choice but the XSR700 has piqued my interest:

A little less "Transformers, robots in disguise" than it's older brother and a nice, easy going sub-200kg weight. Can't say I know much about it though.

Price is interesting. Looking at near new examples the SCR has depreciated badly compared to the XSR which barely moves such that they're near enough at the same price point.

*Actually, width of the bike below the handlebars is also important as it needs to get through my front gate.

Can't say actual raw speed interests me. Teleporting from 40 to NSL which the MT07 seemed to do very nicely is about my excitement threshold.

Check the seat height on the xsr700, I'm pretty sure they are taller compared to standard mt07. I'd go for the xsr over the 950, but, ride it first. Mate tried the 900 and found it vibey compared to the mt09.

I think the SCR950 looks way better than the XSR700 (which just doesn't look "right" to me, like someone's tried to turn a modern-styled twin into a retro twin but missed bits). If you're after classic looks etc. and aren't bothered about big power, the Enfield Interceptor is a good shout (I've heard the earlier Continental GTs, 535cc ones I think, were very vibey as they were singles rather than twins, but the current 650s are twins I believe).

Another option is the Triumph Street Twin? I loved mine although found it a bit cramped on longer journeys and attaching luggage to it was seriously faffy (but possible). Lovely burbling engine, ridiculously frugal on fuel (a 3 day tour of Northern England returned 76mpg!) and felt really well screwed together.

On paper the Interceptor is barely any more powerful than my Rebel and yet heavier. Can't really consider it as a move upwards, more sideways?

A Ninja in the buff I hadn't thought of, thanks And metallic green would be reminiscent of a Golf I used to have The only worry I have with that Kwak (or for that matter, the MT07) is they're now rather conventional which unfortunately translates as "thief-magnet" these days.

Something monstrous like my father-in-law's Bonnie is relatively safe. The dweeby little joyriding shits would be lucky to move it let alone start it No, if that ever disappears it'll be stolen to order. Anyhoo, I like unconventional bikes "WTF is this?!" is just another defence to add on top of disk locks, chains and covers. Ideally odd + not particularly valuable is a good way to avoid unwanted attention.

I had a look at some reviews of the SCR950 and it seems it's a bit rubbish... but "you bought a scrambler that doesn't scramble" suits my perverse personality

<addendum> The list price on the 950 is 8 to 9 bags, depending on options but there seem to be plenty on eBay at 6 ~ 6.5 new or nearly new

I wouldn't get too hung up on the thief magnet thing; unless you've got something particularly desirable/exotic, they'll all probably carry a similar risk. I heard of someone reasonably locally who had their ancient and battered Pan European stolen from their garage, locks/chains etc. all cut to get it, and that's hardly a hot cake, whereas a mate had his 250 offroad bike nicked (all chained up) and they left his R1200RS which was probably worth four times the value and had less security on it (heavier though which presumably is why).

Literally rode right by a motorcycle dealers today...

Interesting when you mention an overpriced bike (SCR950) and the sales rep just goes "err... no" versus the XSR700 where the guy was much more enthusiastic.

Anyhoo, I hopped on the one they had in the show room and it wasn't too bad. I could get both feet down, not flat but not tippy-toe, perfectly usable. That's with the stock, chunky seat @ 835mm high. At 5'5" I must just have a longer than average inside leg

Slimline seat and/or lower the suspension and I'd be able to flat foot it no problem. Handlebar placement felt very natural considering I'd literally just jumped off the Rebel. I think we have a winner
