Bike cuts out when put into gear...

So I took my Honda VTX 1300 out yesterday and as I was going along the engine just cut out and came to a stop.

I put the bike back in neutral and with the stand up I turned it back on with no problems at all.

When I went into gear it just kept cutting out.

My dad came with his van and we put it in the back and got it home.

We assumed it was the side stand switch so we cut it off and bridged the wires together before the switch and that seemed to solve the problem.

I went back out for a test run and all was going well until all of a sudden it stopped running again.

Once again I look to see whether the wires are still bridged together and they are so wiggle it around and try it again.

It starts up and goes into gear so I get the bike home.

Came back to it 15 minutes later and the exact same thing again, it cuts out when going into first.

Today I thought I would have another go. Started straight up and went into gear no problem at all.

25 minutes later the same exact thing happens, it just cuts out. I put it back in neutral and turned it on no problem at all but every time I try to get it in gear it just cuts straight out. It seems to me that it only happens when it is hot.

Can anybody help me here as it seems to me that it is completely intermittent. Sometimes it goes into gear fine and sometimes it just turns off even though we have bridged the wires together.

It can't be the side stand switch surely as I have bridged the wires together before that?

You need to look at the electrical schematic or a food part diagram for the beast.
I owned a BMW R1200GS that got tired of waiting in the yard and decided to have a wee lie down.
When I picked the lazy bastirt back up it wouldn't start.
I faffed with the side stand up down. In gear out of gear clutch in clutch out and eventually the Bitch started.
It has an interlock switch on the Clutch lever, the side stand and a sneakie wee bastirt underneath the gearbox behind the engine. That switch was cvnted.

I'm not suggesting for a moment that Honda are made as good as BMW but they might think the same way. 🤣🤣

Definitely sounds like sidestand switch circuit.

You need a wiring diagram to see if anything else is part of that circuit. I think my clutch switch has an effect on it as well but without getting the manual out I'm not certain.

Basically we got another 'mi bike don' go what do I do?
No year, mileage, history etc just Honda vtx 1300
which wikipedia tells me was made from 2003.

As it's now 2020 it may be a crusty old banger in need of TLC,
or as we have currently have hot dry sunny weather, it may be a pimped up garage queen
dragged out for a once in blue moon ride.

Hoping for instant easy solutions from a forum based on
such meagre info isnt going to get good guesses.

I be looking at the points the earth connection join up and connect to the frame Early ST1300 had issues resulting in a recall this sounds the same !

Side stand switch or the clutch switch as they’re linked together, had this issue on one of my previous bikes and the clutch switch was full of crap/corrosion, took it off, filled it with WD40 and worked it in by working the plunger, job jobbed...
