Feck it!!!

Dropped my 4 year old Shoei about 18 inches to 2 feet onto tarmac and it rolled another 10 feet or so until I caught up with it. First time it has ever been dropped. There is the tiniest mark on it from the drop.

What's the general consensus on replacement? I know the manufacturers say replace after any drop but they would wouldn't they? Be nice if I could hang on to it for another 12-18 months and get a replacement in the sales the winter after next.

I'd keep it, but I'm a tightwad and have been known to ride without a helmet on a quiet night on rural backroads.

Probably best to replace it really.

What damages them to the point of non-functionality is if you compress the polystyrene lining. So if you'd dropped it with something relatively heavy IN the helmet, you'd want to replace it.

Pull back the lining and have a look at the polystyrene shell inside. If it's all in one piece, I'd say you're good.

Maybe this is helpful? https://youtu.be/_nbQsnUvlo4

Mine rolled off the seat of my old bike and "down" the side of the bike before hitting the deck. Probably a similar distance. A few slight scuffs and no dents so I live with it. Most annoying element is the visor has some scuffs and a replacement visor is almost impossible to get hold of. It's not enough of a distraction to prevent riding as I've adapted to it now (bit like having a few permanent bug-splats on it) but it's a bit annoying.

Someone should invent helmets with an overall density ever so slightly more than air; they'd be really light on the head and if you dropped them they'd waft gently down to the ground.

I would happily continue to use it if the inner shell is intact.

I applaud the efforts helmet makers devote to safety, but it is still just a lump of packaging material in a shiny casing.

At the price of decent lids, I'd have to (and do) put up with it, whatever the advice may be.

At four years old I'd be thinking about replacing it in the next year or so anyway

Meh, it's completely fine, you don't even need to consider replacing it because of dropping it like that.

Not dented or cracked etc? Carry on. If it is dented, it's compressed the polystyrene stuff, and that's some of it's ability to absorb shock gone - bin it, or use it as an ornament.

I had to retire a Simpson Bandit with a Predator paintjob when my dad dropped it off the top of the wardrobe where it lived.

I've done the same and I still use the helmet. No visible damage. I tend to replace my helmets every 3-4 years anyway though.

That instantly made me think of the saying 'Up and down like a whores drawers on a Saturday night' and spat my tea out.

Thanks for that Paddy Laughing
