Reading through this article
https://www.northyorkshire.police.uk/newsbeat-story.asp?page=home&storyID=195
and this paragraph caught my eye:

Quote:
Over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend Western Area mounted an operation in the Dales which resulted in 120 bikes being stopped. 24 fixed penalties were issued for illegal registration plates, 23 for illegal exhaust systems, one for no helmet, three for speeding and two riders were reported for summons for speeding – one at 98mph with no insurance and one at 103mph.

There seems to be some inconsistency here - the focus of the drive is supposed to be safety, to reduce biker deaths on North Yorkshire's roads, yet only 5 of those stopped were speeding. I can see that they are having a general crackdown on other bike related issues as well, such as illegal cans and plates, but is this the best way to deal with it? Do policies like this alienate law-abiding riders as well?

The bikers with illegal plates/cans know the laws, they know they're breaking them, if you don't take that risk, you won't get punished..

Good on the police I think, the laws are there for a reason, and although cans and reg plates are a bit petty, they are still laws and police need to be seen to do something about it.

And the person without insurance, and the one without a helmet need taking out and shooting.

I don't think it's fair to put the guy without a lid in the same boat as the guy without insurance Confused

I can see why police get arsey about matchbox plates, but cans ?

Just because it's a law doesn't mean the police have to enforce it. It's illegal to do 1mph over the speed limit, I guess from your stance you wouldn't mind getting a court date for that? After all, as long as the police are seen to be doing something about it Sick

Police doing a NIMBY. Hence the fines for anything possible. 44% of the riders that were stopped got a punishment of some sort.

EDIT: Stat true if each rider punished only got 1 ticket. I.e not someone getting done for speeding at 98mph with no insurance, matchbox plate, race can and no lid. Evolution will punish him Razz

'One for no helmet...'

Class! Very Happy

At the end of the day, we know the rules and can't complain if we get caught - you takes your choice. Petty or not. You never get done for a 1 mph excess either.

Personally, I speed so thats my accepted risk vs reward. For non-insurered riders, they can go to hell as they don't give a toss for anyones welfare in an accident.
