Casual/short boot recommendations

I have a par of old Frank Thomas shorty boots that I wear with jeans for shot trips.

They are comfy, but worn and likely offer about as much protection as trainers.

I already have a pair of full length RST Tundra that I wear on longer rides, but they are rubbish for walking any further than a petrol pumps distance.

Does anyone have any recommendations that fall in the middle ground?

For reference I've been looking at the TCX Hero (https://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/content_prod/318153) as a starting point, but would appreciate real world experience.

I can't think of anything I don't like about them. I have even scrambled around the Lake District fells in them, and found them not particularly lacking (in good conditions of course!).

Whilst in very wet conditions they might not be ideal, they were also all I wore on all my European tours, and coupled with merino socks, I never felt the need for anything more substantial.

I use these; when I commuted to work on my bike I spent all day wearing them in the office, including walking into town at lunchtime. Perfectly comfortable. The ankle is quite high but they're still comfy and nobody else knows the ankle is that high if they're under jeans. Toe-box is quite roomy though so I find I need to wear thick-ish socks.

Spend the day in them, since they're plain enough for my trousers to go over them in the office, comfortable enough to walk into town at lunchtime, spend the weekend in them when out on the bikes and camping. Best boots I've had.

For a few years now, done a few euro tours using them, gone hiking plenty of times in them. They are comfy and easy going, waterproofing is decent but like most heavy rain wont be stopped(getting in through the top). Like with any leather boot, how much you keep on top of caring for them is a factor. They look good and so far are not wearing out anytime soon. They do not stand out as a bike boot and can be worn more than just when riding.

Protection feels solid around the heel/toes.

Only real downside is price, as some of the similar competition is a slightly cheaper. They are 'old school' leather boots though, no venting etc like the more modern stuff.

I own 2 pairs of the TCX X-Blend boots, one in each colour (similar to those you posted, but without the zip closure) and highly rate them, they appear to offer good protection (for a short boot) as they are pretty stiff, but still allow plenty of freedom of movement

I bought mine especially to wear to work, meaning i don't have to change my boots when i get here, and regularaly wear them all day, and do a reasonable amount of walking about on the shop floor at work

I also have some TCX Rush shorty boots, again plenty comfortable, and seem decently made to provide adaquate protection should the worst happen

I'm going to don my face mask and go and try out the Spada Pilgrim Grande and the TCX Hero's side by side at SBS.

FWIW although Spada / reviews suggest that they don't need lacing up due to the side-zip, I find I need to unlace AND use the side-zip to get mine on/off. Maybe I have weird feet or like the laces to actually hold the boot snug.

Figured I'd update this incase anyone else ever considers these two boots.

Tried the TCX Heros and the Spada Pilgrim Grande side by side.

Protection wise, the Spada's are a bit more substantial than the TCX Heros.
The leather is a more rigid overall and the toebox in particular is much harder than the Heros. I can push my thumb into the toebox of the Heros and feel it, the Spada's on the other hand barely move.
Heal and ankle protection is much the same between the two and they both have a steel shank through the sole.

The main differentiating factor between the two is how they feel.

The Spadas feel like a boot. They are solid and boxy. You know they are on your feet. There is not a lot of give, though I suspect as they wear in this will change. They are by no means uncomfortable, but they are 100% boot and 0% shoe.

The Heros feel like an italian shoe. Instantly comfortable, they feel very slight on your feet. The footbed is very cushioned and feels like you have an orpho insert in. Whether this initial suppleness means they will start to feel loose once worn in I do not know.

All very subjective stuff. In the end I went for the Heros as I like the lighter more fitted feel and I'm happy for what feels like a slight trade off in protection.

Thanks, I'll bear that in mind when I replace the Dainese ones I listed above - have repaired both soles already but the upper is about to wear through from the gear lever. WTF Dainese. Seriously WTF.
