Monday afternoon, 98 VFR 800 5th Gen, Southbound I-280 (may not be the autobahn, but traffic routinely flows 15 -20 mph over the limit. Cruising in the carpool lane about 80 mph. Up ahead I see a rider merge onto the freeway from the Hwy 85 onramp. Twenty seconds later he is right on my tail. I pull to the left side of the lane, twist the throttlemeister, and make an underhand motion with my right index finger for him to pass. No response. Ten seconds later I repeat the motion. The rider accelerates until he is even with me and maintains his position.

He is on a blue BMW R1150 RT. We are riding in tandem, side by side, and I'm freaking out a little bit. Locked in step, wheel to wheel, 80 mph. I slow slightly, he slows to stay even. I speed up a little, he stays even. I'm checking this guy out of the corner of my eye. Full face helmet, utility boots, khaki trousers, blue tee shirt. He is erect on the bike, perfect posture, arms straight, elbows not quite locked. His robotic posture and lack of gear gave me the distinct impression that this guy is an off duty Highway Patrol motor officer. Except for the blue tee and full face helmet, he looked the part in every way, right down to his boots.

I began to acclimate to my new found riding buddy. We rode along in tandem for about 10 miles. VFR and BMW wheel to wheel and side by side. Cars were pulling out of our way. I felt the power! It was cool.

Then, just as suddenly as he appeared, he merged off the freeway, and left me alone in the fast lane just as before, a little richer for the experience.

Only one way to tell if he was a highway patrol officer... Did he have a mustasche and mirror raybans?

My Dad always said that the hot weather brings out all the nutters... and this forum seems to be bearing that out.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Man, I can never figure out why these guys never wear any gear. It's like their idea of crash protection is a long sleeve shirt. A jacket? Don't recall ever seeing a CHP officer in a jacket, ever.

PS There is something about this pic that strikes me as odd. These guys look a little too ... chummy.

I hope you're not insinuating that "The love that dare not speak it's name" is a factor?

Anyway, back to the OP. It may have been a ghost Shocked

Doubt it. He was on a Beemer, not a Harley. All the walking dead I've ever seen have been on Harleys. Wink

Hell no! I'm not sayin that. I dare not say it. You see, I respect you lads and lasses a lot; well, most of you. And I just cannot bring myself to say what I think because you might get the wrong idea, you know? It's just too sensitive of a topic, and I'm trying real hard to maintain an acceptable reputation here in the Bike Chat Forum.

Oh hell, I'll say it. Courage, Jeff, say what you mean. I'll say it. Those guys on that Harley look like posers to me. Know what I mean? I don't think they really ride motorcycles, they're probably not even real police officers. That photo was staged.

There, I said it. Cool

It does sound like someone needs to break out the leather chaps.
