Hi all,
Settle an argument for me please.
Bike is complete (as in not stripped down).
Needs rear mono shock removed & replaced.
IF my Polish "mechanic" was to jack the rear end up from the BOTTOM using a jack under swingarm (near rear wheel)
Nothing else.
Rear subframe is NOT removable. Shock is mounted via bolt at bottom thru swing arm (no linkage) & same at top.
What would happen IF you removed top mount bolt on rear shock & pulled shock back out?
Any links to videos explaining why this isn't really a good idea would be really helpful.
Normally I would put stand/lift under engine/centre of bike or even hang it from roof of garage or even remove complete swingarm & wheel, but said "mechanic" seems to think a jack under swingarm would be EASIER & work.

cheers,
GAZ

How are you going to pull the rear shock out when it is still under compression, and how will you get the new one in when the whole bike collapsed down onto the rear tire?

A jack under the swingarm puts the upward vertical force on the swingarm, same as the tire. If your mechanic positions the jack at the swingarm pivot, then maybe (questionable), but not near the rear wheel as you have stated. I believe you understand the forces acting on the shock when the weight of the bike is compressing the spring, and I'm with you. You need to support the bike in such a way that the swing arm is allowed to pivot down in order to remove and replace the shock. Your mechanic would know this if he ever replaced a rear shock before.

Have him show you how easy it is on his own bike before you let him work on yours.

Hi,
Thank you!
Exactly what I said but trying to explain to car mechanics it not the same as working on a car.
I know how to remove a shock. He SAYS he does Rolling Eyes
I'll show him this & explain that's why he can assist me by holding the tools. but I wouldn't let him work on my bike. (He doesn't own a bike)

cheers,
GAZ

GAZ,
Reminds me of a time I once witnessed an apprentice mechanic lift a bus on an axle lift, then proceed to remove the drive line and the torque converter housing bolts one by one (no transmission jack). There were about 4 bolts left when a journeyman intervened and saved the young man from dropping an 830 pound transmission on his head. That would hurt. Doh!

Ask him how he would replace a McPherson strut on an automobile suspension. Would he place a jack under the frame or under the control arm? What he is suggesting is akin to placing a jack under the control arm, lifting the vehicle, and then trying to replace the strut under compression. I doubt there is a man alive with the superhuman strength to pull that one off.

Flipping the footpegs and putting axle stands under them is a good one.

I generally do put a jack under the swingarm with it in the fully extended position to stop it banging down onto the floor when you take the bolt out and to make it easier to align the holes again when it comes to refitting the shock.
