Usually I wouldn't scrimp in this area but saw a bargain I couldn't refuse on a rear 130/70/17 for my son's CBR125R. At £50 delivered it was almost half the price of a brand new one but it had virtually no tread worn at all. Also only being for a 125 tyre condition probably not as critical as it would be as say for example my Fazer. Important still, but not as critical.

Anyway got delivered straight to my fitter he commented that the rubber seems very hard. I had a feel and he's right. He said not to worry though. Not cracked and brittle but just very plasticy compared to the front one which was same make and model but brand new.

Thoughts?

Tyres have a "shelf life".

cheers,

Should have a month and year stamped on the sidewall.

For a 125cc it will be fine. I know some 125s go faster than 600cc bikes, but as long as there are no cuts or there are no splits, they will be fine.

Acid test being, would you ride the bike with them on, if yes, then all is ok.

It must have, AFAIK. Looking at the date is a Good Idea.

I've got an old Rieju 50 wheel just over there by the fireplace, it's got a new tyre on it, but it's "2313", so getting on a bit. A hard Conti-Twist tyre on a 50? Hm. Were it me, I would, but that's on a 30MPH 50.

*depending on what you get, I would think a 130/70-17 should be £50-£60, last one I bought was £58 I think.

My YBR came with stock Cheng Shit tires on it. Plenty of criticism on the net about how crappy those tires are,, like hardened plastic. I thought "these guys expect too much; should have no problem if I ride conservatively."

Until I locked up the rear tire during stop and go in bumper-to-bumper traffic. What's this shit? The bike has a freakin' drum brake. It has no business locking up the rear under the conditions that it did. Happened twice. I'm getting better tires at the first opportunity.

Wow they actually changed the tyre size with the newer ones!

Check manufacturer date stamp on side. Easiest way.

You want to try Avon's. Locked the front wheel on damp roads whilst in the fast lane of the m5.

Getting to my feet on the central reservation is definately the scariest moment of my life.

Or the Dunlop d207 that came as stock on the F4i. Might as well have been coated in oil. Difference between them and Pilot Powers was immense.

Expect it's completely fine but as everyone else has said, how old is it?

"On the sidewall you will find a tyre's ‘DOT code’. One of the key pieces of information that can be gained from this is the date the tyre was manufactured.

Since the year 2000, the date section of the code - the last digits - has been made up of 4 numbers.

The first two digits tell you the week number and the last two indicate the year the tyre was manufactured."

I only buy Bridgestones. I know there are other premium brands out there to consider but I just figure a Japanese bike deserves a Japanese tyre...

Really helpful. Thanks!!!

So just checked both bikes:
Got BT45's on my son's CBR125R and they're 3716 (September 2016) on the rear and 4919 (December 2019) on the front
Got RS10's on my Fazer and they're 4616 (November 2016) on the rear and 1917 (May 2017) on the front.

Both bikes have had two new tyres in the last month, all four bought cheap as possible on eBay, the only one that was used was my son's rear one.

Rear tyres on both bikes are similar age but the one on the 125 seems definitely more plasticy! All other three seems nice and rubbery.

It is likely just the surface has dried out from not being used. Once you get a few miles they will soften up. Bt45's possibly the oldest design in the world. Be aware they are bias ply, dont mix with radial.

For next time I would be fitting a pair of these* www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=%28110%2C130%29+70+17+pilot+street+radial&_sacat=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&_blrs=recall_filtering

* Although I would probably fit a road 5 front and street radial rear, road5's dont go down to 130. One advantage of chinese 125's, they often have 140 width rear giving far more choice.

If it was the older CBR, I've got a shed full of wheels and tyres for them, along with most parts Laughing

I used to buy used tyres, when I was younger. If the rubber is still fresh and there are no cracks anywhere, it will be alright. If stored in shade (no UV light damage) tyres last suprisingly long time.

I've never had issues with grip with used tyres, both on dry and wet surfaces.

This is what I was hoping! In fact they already feel a bit softer now they've been fitted.

You mean front to back? How/why would this be a problem? Probably onle ever planning on using the same tyre make and model on both front and back on any bike anyway but would be interesting to know why this is a no-no.

Not according to the Bridgestone website. We used their website to decide the tyre that would best fit my son's needs (same as I did when selecting my RS10's) and then went shopping on eBay for that specific model.

I've got Avon Storms on my hack V-Strom 650. They're passable in the dry, but even so, I can chirp the rear on corner entry Laughing

In the damp and wet they're like every other Avon I've tried, crap.

A cople of people I trust that are not afraid to get whatever they are riding right over, rate these quite highly. Never had a set myself, so I can't comment.
https://www.avontyres.com/en-us/tyres/storm-3d-x-m

On a smaller bike, the Streetrunners I had on were plenty grippy in the wet to be fair. That said, I'll take my favoured Roadsmart 2's over most things.

They're what I have. Not a patch on a pilot road three in the wet.

Good enough for exhaust scraping in the dry, and I am getting decent mileage out of tgem, probably because they're made from old biro caps.

Different construction and it gives a different contact patch that is not compatable. Looked up the front size it is 100-80-17, limiting you to bias ply. Even so the pilot street is svailable in bias, so that is what Id get next time.

Actually it's more the case that crosssply tyres let go (in general) before radials.
