Well that didn't last long, only had the thing a week and i've already broken it (well, i don't actually think it's anything i've done, but it is broken)

Long story short, took it out on Sunday, after about 10 mins fuel light came on, so found the nearest petrol station, filled up, paid, bike wouldn't start, it turned over and coughed, then next time it didn't even crank (almost as though battery was dead), so i pushed it into a spare parking space

Tried starting again, and it crancked and coughed, same again a few more times, then finally came to life on about the 5th try

Rode it carefully for the next 15 mins, without issue (slighly more noticable burbling and the odd popping on over-run)

It was only when i got home and took my helmet off that i noticed the slightly odd sound at tickover (video below)

https://youtu.be/ST3fNZZneH8

I don't think its the cam chain tensioner, as that is more metallic sounding (going off other youtube vids), i'm starting to think it has maybe jumped a tooth on the cam chain, possibly leading to some valve overlap, causing the chuffing sound (and possibly causing the more pronounced burbling on over-run)

I have it booked in at the local Triumph garage, but they can't even look at it for another 2 weeks (for a diagnostic), then another 2 weeks after that if it needs any work doing, looks like i won't be doing much more riding this year

Did it not come with some warranty. Even if not you must have some comeback on the dealer.

Yeah, i have a 3 month warranty, i'm just trying to get as much info as i can before i go back to them (the dealers is shut on Mondays), as they will just say "they all sound like that"

I have also contacted the warranty company (its a propper warranty) and i can take it to any garage, i just need them to approve any work before they commence, but the local Triumph dealer can't fit me in for a diagnostic until 9th Sep, and if it needs work, that won't be til 22nd Sept

I'm just trying to get as many opinions/ideas as possible

Do you think it sounds off though Polarbear?, or am i just being paranoid?

I would say it sounds like a nasty dry squeaking chattering noise, at less than engine RPM, so would expect a problem with the cam chain, cam, balance shaft or some associated thing. I would not be inclined to use it.

It's difficult to say but there is an intermittant sound there that I don't particularly like.

The thing is, it didngt start and it didn't start for a reason. Whether that reason is something little or something big you need to get it checked and whether that mens sticking it on the Triunmph computer or getting an old fashioned good mechanic, it needs to be done.

I'm presuming there is no engine warning/management light up on the dash.

I would get hold of the warranty company, get their permission to have the Triumph shop look at it then go back to Triumph and tell them the score with the warranty company. Once it's all agreed, leave it with them.
1) You won't be tempted to ride it.
2) If a mechanic has a quiet afternoon and your bikes there they could well checkit over early.

I know all dealerships are different but my Triumph dealer was spot with the way he treated customers.

I hope it gets sorted quicky, it's gutting when something happens like that and modern bikes are now so user unfriendly.

Don't worry, i am not using it

Having googled the cam chain sound on the Striple, it certainly doesn't souund like that though (ramdon youtube clip below)

https://youtu.be/Sz7VXGxWonY

Might give the dealer a ring tomorrow, see what they say about it, but i would much rather a Triumph dealer looked at it than the dealer/garage i bought it from, but they should at least be able to look at it sooner

That is pretty much the path i am taking, just the length of time it is going to take

And yes, i have already spoken to the warranty company, they are fine with me using any garage of my choosing, and i have spoken to the Triumph dealer and sent him over the warranty policy wording (as requested by them) so they will let me know if they are willing to work with the warranty company or not (can't see why they wouldn't, but you never know)

It just means i will be bikless for the next 4 (or more) weeks....... bugger

You could send them your video clip, or at least play it over the 'phone.

Still, someone here may be able to help more. Give it a bit of time (here, anyway)!

I wonder if it's lunched its alternator?

I've seen more than one triple do that. Be interesting to see what the charging output's like.

Surely the dealer should recover it and lend you a courtesy bike!

Alternator? My 1050 has a stator.

It does sound very much like a shrill bearing.

It sounds louder on the clutch side. That has the starter and clutch etc on that side as well on a 1050. Dont know about a little-un.

There's loads of post , I havent read them all , but it's quite an unpleasant sound , almost like a bearing spinning in it's housing. I wonder if it's the fuel pump? Maybe it has picked up some shite , when it ran out of petrol? If it is a bearing somewhere, spinning that ain't good news.

For now...

Did I read something about sprag clutches failing on triples?

If the sprag clutch fails the starter still spins but the rollers dont engage to spin the engine.

Had this with my fzr.

Sprag clutch problems on some older Triumph triple engines, 900 & 955i are the main culprits from what I remember. I haven't heard of it being a problem on the Striples.

My first thought from the general shrill noise was that the starter motor wasn't disengaging. Then I saw the second video and it also sounded pretty awful.

Do they sound this bad on tickover in real life, or do youtube videos and laptop speakers make it sound particularly awful?

I think you might be referring to the Triple whistle (induction whine), from what I understand they all make that sound, it's the slightly irregular chuffing sound

Anyhow, the bike is now back on its way to the dealers for them to have a look at, I'm just hoping they don't turn round and say "they all sound like that mate", which I am half expecting
