Afternoon all,

When giving the bike a proper clean this morning I spotted what appears to be a hairline crack on the head. It may well be nothing and may well just be an imperfection in the paint. Can anyone who has an eye for these sorts of things comment before I take it into the dealer? No apparent leaks coming from it or anything. Bike is a 2017 plate with 5,600 miles on it. It has an sp engineering full exhaust system on it too.

Thanks in advance

The last shot something is even worse just right of your circle.
The others might be superficial flaking or oxidisation starting.
Has it had a bang that side at all.

Is the first one showing the same 'crack' as the second two? If so, then it's fine, it just looks bad from some angles. If not, the first photo does look like a crack... but photos don't always tell the whole truth. Get it looked at, is my advice.

Thanks. No not aware of it ever having had a bang. I got it when it has 2000 miles on it. I think what you're seeing to the right of my circle is where the sump attaches, so some kind of gasket/sealant.

Hi MarJay,

It's going in on the 10th, but I've had a very close look at it and it looks like mark in the casting or possibly the paint. Sent the photos to a main dealer who are certain it's nothing. I'll update after the 10th if its anything nasty!

To be fair, they are especially cheaply manufactured, mass produced bikes. Bang for buck and all that.
They have to cut corners somewhere apart from the suspension I guess... Not slagging off your bike dude,
I sort of have one of those myself.

Yea, I'm not sure why I expect it to be immaculate. I do try and keep it that way myself. But I expect much less love goes into the automated production line I'm sure it's assembled on!

Can't quite remember where I saw it but isn't there a special dye that you dab on to reveal fractures?

3rd world castings, poor quality aluminium alloy ( it's always alloyed with something as on its own its's hardly any harder than soap) which is prone to cracking , probably due to internal stresses in the material from when it was cast. Just a point but back when I worked in engineering , cast iron castings were left out in the rain for 5 years to weather before they were considered ready fror machining, nowadays it's more like 5 seconds. So cracks. As long as they don't extend deep enough to leak combustion pressure or cooling water they are probably ' acceptable' , just the material de -stressing.
